Most of all better see if the harddrive has been detected on bios. If this dont register after you connect the disk then that will much more cant see on any OS. Better detect it first on bios but if you dont know how to do this, then better have it to technician, you can refer it to your other friend knowledgeable in computer troubleshooting.

Go to control panel administrative tools computer management storage and see if the hard disk is displayed there and see the status. If it is showing this to be un allocated then first check it again by connecting it on other pc preferably a pc with linux os. If the problem persists then the partition table or the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the hard disk is either corrupted or either deleted accidentally (or by a virus activity or presence of bad sectors on the drive). In this case you can use a free utility called test disk to recover your partition table so that you can back up your disk. You can check your drive for bad sectors and other problems by using a utility from seagate called as seatools for windows.. (Works even if your drive is not from seagate). All the best with your drive Pal!

if windows is saying USB device is unrecognized then I suggest you first try in 2-3 different machines and front and backside port. if no solution.. then try to use linux machine and mount the disk explicitly.. and you need back up that's why I am not advising to do low level formatting or something.. but yeah definitely try to to use recovery software like recuva.. Good Luck..

the first think you do... back up all important files in your hardisk... then after that reformat your pc using your Harddisk of your friend... that is the best solution to accept your hardisk into your pc

First of all, there are many possible reasons why the removable media cannot be detected by windows. Sometimes, you just need to plug it out and plug it again until windows successfully install the appropriate drivers. However, if the problem still arises especially when you said windows does not detect the removable media at all, it could be a problem with the hardware or with windows itself. You can restart your computer and during the post bios screen, press F8 to enter boot options and select safe mode. Then try plugging in the removable media, and if the problem is not yet fixed, I suggest that you download a linux distribution such as ubuntu, puppy linux, mandriva, open suse, etc. You can burn the images of these linux distros on a cd or boot from usb flash disk using appropriate softwares, thus you will be able to troubleshoot the problems. Using linux to recover data is really useful especially when your windows operating system gets corrupted.
