http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2546115.aspx If you refer to the above discussion this will give you some background as to who Happy Feet is and why I am so pleased this awesome creature is to be released into feeding waters in the Southern Ocean rather than be kept in a zoo. The research vessel hasn't set off yet but it will do very soon. The latest article is in the link below. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/australia/8705941/New-Zealands-lost-penguin-Happy-Feet-to-hitch-home-on-research-ship.html I love the New Zealanders even more now and yes, I think they are doing the right thing. It is interesting that Happy Feet has a satellite tracking device fitted so the zoo and members of the public can track his movements. This will help to understand more about Emperor Penguins and their feeding habits. I do hope he doesn't get lost again!

I love those stories with a nice ending. Thanks for sharing. Theres just one thing that bothers me though. The tracking device they seem to install on all animals lately. We had a tv show here where the host went with some scientists to install such devices on a mommy bear and her two babies. They were berried in the snow and they had to dig them out, then the host was holding the 2 little ones while they took the mom out and fitter her with such a device, then they did to the babies. I dont think humans should touch wild animals to begin with, they're very sensitive to the smell. I dont agree with fitting them with such devices. Who knows what damage it can do to them. Imagine if some giant hand were to grab you and staple a device to your ear or worse yet, as they did for the turtles, strap it around your body. Id be very angry and I know these animals might feel those. I try to put on a scarf around my dog's neck and he doesnt like it, he keeps trying to take it off him until I take it off to not put it on him again. So its nice that they helped that little guy but I wish they wouldnt have fitted him with one of those.

I must admit, these devices worry me too. Since I've no idea how big the device is on the penguin I chose not to mention it. If it was like a small chip..you know, rather like my Flojo has under her skin for identification..fair enough, but somehow I think it's going to be bigger. Oh well, let's hope our little friend isn't too bothered about it.

Turns out its quite big. Poor thing, I wonder what the other penguin will say when they see him wearing this type of "jewelry" I dont know why they couldnt use a small chip under its skin. Now they say we'll be able to watch its progress via the net. Why do we have to control everything as human beings.

Thank you for sharing the news with us.From the image,he looks as if he doesn't care in the least, turns up him nose at ,even though he has eaten sand and sticks before now.He is worthy of the title of emperor penguin.Just as you said,New Zealanders do a right thing.Three cheers for them!

That's so lovely, thanks. Yes, his title "Emperor" Penguin does him proud, doesn't it? I do hope his release back into the wild goes well.

That ia awesome! I hadn't heard anything on "Happy Feet" in awhile! Nice to know Happy Feet will be released back in the ocean and will have a satellite tracking device on him! I hope this time he finds his way back to Antartica! It would be disppointing if Happy Feet got lost again! I'll keep on fingers cross!

We're all hoping he's going to be OK. I believe his tracking collar is quite big. Shame he couldn't be microchipped or something.

Adorable isn't he? It will be fascinating to see where he ends up..hopefully, not on a beach in New Zealand!
