what is the difference between rar and zip?

Hi, i want to compress a large file (3.9 GB) as much as i could so that i can upload the file for personal use. There were two options when i tried to do so; rar and zip.
Which one should i use rar or zip to get maximum compression? how much GB will the file have in the end?

I think the best to raise the files is rar because it reduces the space
But not significantly

Hi
I guess both are the software which having the same purpose with different file extensions. I have used both. Both giving almost the same results or many be minor difference. So you can use any of them.
