In some areas of India, the Naxalites with new names of Maoists are active and I think they have definitely some influence in the poor in those areas, otherwise they could not operate there.

Naxalite refers to various militant communist groups operating in different parts of India. The term Naxal is derived from Naxalbari, a small village in West Bengal where this movement started. The naxals are considered far left radical communists supportive of maoist political sentiment and ideology.

In 1967, A violent movement started to redistribute the land to landless. Either landlords or government(exactly I don't know who) had taken over their lands. So, landless people decided to armed struggle against guilty. First time it started in Naxalbari village in West Bengal. So these activists were known and are known as naxalites.
