Hello fellow Virginian!! I live in the Western part of the state, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. I'm watching The Weather Channel right now, and it looks like they are predicting it to be a category 3 or 4 by the time that it hits the VA coast. That means a lot of rain, and very high winds. Stock up on bottled water, batteries, food (that won't spoil), and flashlights, along with toilet paper, your cell phone, manual can opener (to open the food), clothing, personal hygeine items such as soap, etc....basically enough supplies to sustain yourself for a few days if necessary. And don't forget to have your car's gas tank full in case of evacuation. It's also a good idea to have a first aid kit and a battery operated radio in case of the electricity going out. Many people board up their windows so that the wind and any broken tree branches won't break the glass. I wouldn't try to drive my car out in it because of the wind and possible flooding. If you want to leave your house, now is a good time to do it BEFORE it hits. If you choose to stay, keep a radio or tv on so that you can listen for updates. Stay away from windows and doors....like in your bathroom or basement. Don't go outside, even if it looks like the weather is clearing...you could be in the eye of the storm, which means that it will pick back up quickly. Don't think it's over until the weather people tell you it is. Keep me posted!! I'll be praying for your safety.

You're welcome. I tried to remember everything that we've been through in previous years while in Florida. I just heard that they are starting a mandatory evac of the Outer Banks, so I expect that they will be evacuating VA as well soon. If I were you, I would have everything ready to leave. If you can get off work, and have the money to go, I would probably go ahead and do so. You can brave it out, but please be careful. A hurricane is no small storm. They are pretty fierce.

Yes you should evacuate! A hurricane is not a little storm that you can just wait out in the comfort of your own home! A hurricane is a combination of a state sized flood and a tornado. Good luck trying to stay alive if you get caught in one. If you want to survive with minimum trouble leave now. Take provisions (first aid, drinking water, food, clothes, cash, and id) that will last for a few weeks because power will be out for at least that long. Also take any valued possessions with you know because those will not likely be there when you come back. Expect your house and property to get a lot of damage.

Ok, it sounds like you are not in the direct path or Irene. I just hope for you sake as well that it passes over. The response below me gives far better detail on what some good preparations are. :) (P.S. Sorry if I sounded a bit nasty up there. I was thinking of Katrina when I typed and I wouldn't want to see a fellow myLotter in that condition).
