Why manholes are round

One day, our teacher asked us if we know the reason behind the shape of the manhole. None of us knew, so, none of us answered. She made several clues. Still we didn't get the answer. Its related to the cover, to the cover's diameter. And because none of us can answer, she told us why. And its good to know why. It is because, even if the cover will be moved or turned, it will never go down the hole. If it is square of rectangle, if you have it placed on an upright position or a standing position, it will fall, definitely.

Wow! This is quite interesting for me. I have a brother, who was once applying for a job, who was given this kind of question. I forgot what his answer was but I am sure it is not the same as your given answer in here. Anyway, this piece of information might be handy in the future. But really, when my brother told me about this question, I had a different thing running in my head back then. I thought that it was because round objects tend to distribute the stresses around unlike rectangular or square objects which has greater stresses at the corners. That would be my answer if I get that question, but now I think I got a better answer with what you shared.

Companies sometimes really ask strange questions huh. They really are testing the reasoning skills. But, at least it helped you a bit. Maybe there is a more concrete explanation circulating in the web. But, I'm already convinced by what our teacher told us. Maybe I'll just browse some related pages some other time. Feel free to share it to me if you find something else.

Here most manholes are square or rectangular. Obviously people are not as clever as your teacher! It is actually quite difficult to make a perfectly round hole!

After that class meeting, I have been very conscious of the manhole shapes. I found some in our place which aren't round too.

when I first read your post I thought you were asking why are there manholes around lol. I think it is also for convenience.

Actually, I was supposed to post it as a question. But, I thought, I might as well tell the reason why. Maybe there are other reasons too than can be added up.
