I was talking in a previous discussion about my Acer laptop. It had been a hand-me-down from my niece. She had used it about one week, dropped it on it's side pushing in the port where you plug in the power cord into the computer which began causing problems. They found that to repair it, Acer wanted $200 to just let them mail it back to them and who knew how much else after that. They decided to buy a new laptop and set this one aside in a plastic bag. A year or so later, my daughter saw this new-looking laptop not being used and voila...I have a laptop for the first time. We had to take it to a computer repair place since it had no power cord or anything. They sold us a generic one and off I went. I worked fine for 6 months or so and then it began having problems charging. I even burned up another power cord when the computer got too much heat from the port and I started smelling a hot, and then burning smell. We wondered if the computer repair people even actually fixed that port or not? Who knows? We thought I needed a new power cord and went to a battery place who had one in stock. He plugged it into the computer and it immediately got hot. He told us it was the port that needed to be fixed or replaced and not the power cord and recommended someone to fix it. By the time the person got back to us the next day, hubby had decided to just bite the bullet and buy a new laptop for me. Woo Hoo! We had spent $200 the first time to enable me to use the Acer. Now, who knew how much we would have to spend to fix it again. So, he found a compaq for $298 at Walmart. And I'm loving it!

Those kinds of issues are really troublesome and expensive to repair. A reputable place would have told you that in the first place. I am glad you got six months out of it, but it is even better that you have a new lap top.
