I survived whatever we had yesterday, I personally think the media went overboard with hurricane Irene, the weather man on CNN stated on Friday "I don't like this hurricane at all for the northeast, I've been doing this job for 18 years and have never seen anything like this, It doesn't look good" when he made that comment I was like wow this could be worse than Katrina's. The whole neighborhood was empty everything on the store shelf's were almost completely gone I felt like it was a countdown until the end of the world. On Saturday the hurricane weakened from a category 3 to a category 1 which was good news to me but the media was still saying that although its a category 1 we'd still get a lot of damage in NYC. Take a look at the category charts on this website below http://gohsep.la.gov/hurricanerelated/hurricanecategories.htm As you can category 1 is basically "no real damage" and yet they were talking like it was a category 5. I totally understand they wanted us to be safe but this was over the top, When hurricane Katrina was coming they didn't hype anything and that was a worst catastrophic hurricane. Yesterday was nothing but on and off rain. What do you think about the media hype talk about hurricane Irene?

tell that to the people who lost thier homes! The storm was not a strong one but it was a big one that covered and affected many area's including mine in upstate, ny where we were without power for weeks! Not alot of lives were lost, because of the news coverage. I feel it is allways better safe than sorry speaking from personal experience. I am 6 hours from nyc and we had plenty of damage. then 1 week later tropical storm lee took out 6 or more counties here with flash flooding. If people hadnt listened to the news there would have been thousands of deaths. I agree that the news made it sound alot worse than it actually was however I do think that if they had not and it turned out to be that bad everyone would have blamed them. I think it was bad and then it just weakened.

Maybe the storm was not really bad in your area, but in other areas it was. It seems that in NC and other places along the East Coast there are still many without power and places that are completely cut off from other towns due to roads being out. With 40+ deaths and millions without power, I do not believe that there was any overhype at all. People need to remember that people complained after Katrina that the newscasters did not do a job informing them, so now they are making sure that they aren't repeating those same steps. Be thankful that you did not suffer any loss, but also be thankful that you were warned to leave if it had of been bad!

Hi Judy, The media always over hypes events that happen on the East Coast. Remember that earthquake they had a few days ago? The media acted like some major disaster happened. I do think it was a good thing they over hyped this storm because it allowed people to be prepared for the worst. I do think it is better to be safe than sorry.

Being over prepared is way better than be caught off guard. I recall an incident where a typhoon in 2009 whom everyone just ignored since it only has signal number 1, meaning the lowest almost sunk metro manila or most of it.

but generally the media I see something very interesting so people begin to shumyat about it until it stops we stop. exactly happened to this hurricane. every day the same will keep people. Well, now we'll begin survived so much unknown. So people worry more, and sometimes live in fear. why the media should be somewhat tolerant to trbyava not everything said on TV and everything looks like come the end of the world. nice day!

This hurricane was like a movie for me because all the time that I turned on the TV it was there, my husband doesn't likes to watch news again and again and one day when he turn on the TV I said "let's watch Irene" and he said "no I don like that movie I already watched and know how it ends" lol!. But yes I agree with you the media overboard about Irene.
