I have started my teaching career and I am teaching the Engineering students. I would love to have some tips from the experienced people in this field. I know it is more of a talent but still I think everyone have some tips in their mind.

Do you mean that they remain quiet as you are discussing lessons in front? If that is so, well you can directly instruct them to keep quiet while you are presenting the lessons. I think these people are more than old enough to understand that simple line. If they don't want to, then you can start a test regarding the subject you are discussing which if they fail would slowly affect their grades. This will teach them to listen attentively to the discussion unless they want to fail in that subject thereby wasting their time and their money.

I think this method is also good but I want to make them good with their grades. I am trying new things everyday, especially humorous one so that they feel light and more interested in the subject.

It could increase the level of participation especially if the method of teaching is done in a light and humorous manner. One method that I use to get the student(s) involved in the discussion is the frequent asking of questions that will make hi think or use his reasoning ability. In this way, he will be able to learn the subject not just from what he hears from the discussion. By developing the reasoning ability through well-prepared questions (usually those that start with how and why), the student will see the topic from another perspective. His way of reasoning can give the teacher an idea of what he has learned and the things he is still lacking so the teacher can adjust as to what, when, or how to teach him. Good day!

Asking question is easy when you have a good rapport with the students. They will wait for my questions when I am teaching. I know it from their faces that who will know the answer so first I ask it from those who don't know it, then I ask those who know it, so that they can learn it and also can get inspired from them.

I assumed you are a registered or license engineer already, which means you do have practical experience already. Now, if you are not an engineer and is teaching minor general education subjects in the college of engineering, then it will be a chanllenging task for you because it it in the engineering college that all forms of jokes, humors, and sometimes manly issues you will encounter everyday. However, if you an engineer and teaching an engineering subject, my piece of advice to you is to choose a subject that you have a hands-on practical experience so you can share your knowledge to the students. The students are not damn, they will know if you have the right stuff on the job. If you don't have the experience and the license as an engineer, then be an honorable man and go straight to your dean and resign and get your experience and license first for you have no reason for handling an engineering subject at all. You will just be talking what you read on the book and no knowledge transfer at all, purely a waste of time and a pitty to the students and the one paying for the tuition. If you have all the ingredients I have mentioned above as an engineer, you will have a class that is silent and you get all the attention the moment you step into the classroom. Since engineering deals with numbers, you assign a number to all you students in that section and memorize the corresponding number assigned to that student, so you will have a good attnedance check. You let them start to say there number from say 1 to 40, any missing number means absent. This method is quick and simple and don't eat much of your time. You bring your chalk and eraser only and demand each student to bring there text book in the class, be sure you memorize each page of the text book and keep solving sample problems evary seesion you have and give short quiz (10 questions)evrey meeting. You will become the best professor in the college and students will love you and will remember you always. That is what we called "BRANDING" your name. Congratulations on your new job "Professor Sanjay" and good luck. Remember always, the right ingredients makes a class SILENT. This I say to you because "ENGINEERS KNOW THE FORMULA FOR SUCCESS"

Hi, I love your response. Yes I have 2 years experience at the field, but I know more experience I have more it is beneficial for me and the students. I was good at the academics and I can teach them all the stuff. The license thing is new to me and I search for it if it is here in India also. I am not a consulting Engineer but I have worked as a Civil Engineer with 2 MNCs. I tell them about the stuff they are learning and then I tell them where they are going to use it in field. Thanks for the effort you have made to write this post. Sincerely, Sanjay Kumar.

I think the key is to make the students be interested in your lessons. As long as they focus on your lessons, then they will hardly have spare time to speak or chat. So you have to make your classes much more interesting and try to ask more questions to your students. Make the classroom much more active. I love China

Hi sanjay,I am a teacher and have been teaching on and off since many years. In my personal opinion, there are 2 most important things to bear in mind to gain the confidence and respect of your students.First of all, we teachers should be hard working and good at our job - see that we look for novel ideas to make a lesson interesting and also study the mood of the class . The second point is to be understanding and develop a rapport with the students, and this automatically makes them also treat you the same way..all the best , enjoy your weekend and happy teaching

Hey sanjay91422, If you think about it, when students don't talk it makes you frusturated because how do you know if they're dreaming or paying attention? When students talk, they actually have more of a chance catching what your saying. Why don't you take turns with your students on a daily basics....let them talk and then you talk, but while you are talking include real teen life situations in your discussion. (or whatever age group you are teaching)It would make it fun for the students, while making you feel more confident in your teaching abilities!

I think if I give them the time to talk then I will have no time to talk because their talk never stops. I can talk about the topics from their age because I am of their age too just a little difference. I will try to include more real life situations in my discussion. Thanks for the advise.

Here in the UK, primary and secondary education have been changed into a jungle (secondary education was always a challenge, discipline-wise) by the bleeding hearts brigade and their namby pamby rules, but we expect better behaviour from students at the tertiary education level. My brother has told me on several occasions about how good a teacher he thought his old physics schoolmaster was, because he made mistakes on the blackboard and the pupils were kept alert correcting them and learned quite a bit of physics as a result (I had the better qualified head of department). You could try the occasional deliberate mistake, and then ask the class "How come you didn't spot this? Why do you bother to turn up if you don't pay attention?"

to get students to listen in class, they should be able to attract their attention. have to show them what makes the train. should take their fear as they say. I wish you success. nice day!

I think you have written very good lines here, "Have to show them what makes train". Is it your own line or heard it somewhere? Nice one. Thank You.:)

Sir Sanjay, nothing beats a well prepared teacher with good sense of humor in front of his students so they wont get bored and surely their interest would be focused on everything that the teacher will be sharing or imparting at them.

Hi, Yes, if I am well prepared I will have a good confidence and I will teach them without any hesitation. The boring times will never come if I am a little humorous. I agree with your statement. Thanks.

My sister is a college professor and we've talked about this before. She said she would usually bang the board. If that doesn't work, she would stop talking and give them a look that would mean "y'all better watch out" until everyone would settle down. I don't know how she does that look though. LOL

I can understand that look. I also use it. They get silent with it but after some time they again forget and start something. It is only few students who will do it but it disturbs the whole class. I think I have to be more interesting to them and also have to prepare the main topic very well. They ask me questions and I like that part. The best thing I like to do is, I will ask questions from the ones who make noise, I know they don't know the answers and then I will ask the one who will know the answer, this way I try to inspire them to learn and get inspire from the ones who know the answer and learn in the class.
