Does smart cover for ipad really that smart?

i just bought the leather smart cover for my ipad 2, and i really loved it until i've found unremovable smudge on my smart cover leather no matter how you try to clean it the stain would never leave. And some scratches on the back of my ipad because smart cover only protects the screen.
