Importance of submeeting tags to our discussion and comments

I wonder each time when it is asked by the site to submit tags for my discussion or comment.
Is this necessary to add tags to our discussion as already it is categorized under various categories?
If i am not submitting how it will affect my earnings?
Is there any way to earn through tags?
