Using the right tackle

I do an unbelievable amount of freshwater fishing. Rarely do I got home without a stringer of pan fish but what about the big one that we always dream of catching. I'm not saying Ive never caught an Impressive trophy bass or pike but what works the best? I've had success here and there but what lure and color is your baby and what conditions would you use it under? Can homemade lures get the big ones? Sometimes it seems like a whole summer can be wasted looking for that monster, is there such a thing as a bad summer for fishing???? I hope not but tell me what you think.
