A few years ago our country's literacy rate was around 60% i guess. Now in a recent general knowledge book it says 78%.Is that the correct figure? If yes then i guess our literacy rate will be 100% by 2020!

Hello ravi, Literacy rate is growing slowly and I hope and wish for a 100 % literacy in India. In South literacy rate is really high especially in Kerala (which is 100% literate state). But the situation in North is not encouraging and many children are not going to school and do works for their livelihood. Some kids are even wish to join the school but they are forcing to do the jobs either by parents or by relatives. Many kids are engaged in begging in the street lights (on red signals), streets and in bus. I have seen that many women are begging with their small kids as a weapon. They are showing the kids and asking money to provide food and milk for the child. I really felt bad on those kids, they never able to go to the school for sure. So a complete liberate India will be a far away dream.

I know it is not really 100% even though all are proud to announce that Kerala is the 100% literate state. Yes we are developed much on this sector.

And literacy in kerala is not really 100% but around 90%. Anyway 78% literacy is a good achievement for the country as a whole because the literacy rate was 10% when british were ruling india. So it is a huge leap forward for us.

Whats the use of getting literacy rate high when those poor childrens not getting education till. As in rural slums area til child labour happens as those peoples not able to give education to those childrens as their earnings not getting up till. But still there are more improvements in educations im happy to see more females getting good ranks in their studies when compared to males. Female childrens are more motivated by their parents to achieve lot since kerala has highest literacy rate in my country in that also womens are more literate than mens. Im feeling happy if its reach 100% by 2020.

Child education is more important to enrich our literacy rate because they are pillars of india.still they are more quarrels happening between little childrens and their parents. As childrens are more interested for education but parents refused them for studies and make them to work. If anything can stop those query my country wil be more educated in future.

by literacy rate i was referring to general literacy including that of children.I live in kerala and i dont know if children in northern india are still suffering from illiteracy?SInce they have passed a bill to made education mandatory for children of the age 6-14 it is going to be sure that our literacy will be 100% everywhere in india, not just in kerala.

Ravi, it is only a theoretical side (the bill) and practical side is so pathetic. I am also from Kerala but lives in Delhi so I know better the situation here.
