Internet : what is scam ?

I hate hearing the word 'scam' I do not really know what the meaning of the scam. What is scam? There are may be some negative impacts if we get caught by them. Mylotters, there may be some ways to recognize scam and how to deal with or tackle them. I have never or never caught up with their behavior or invitation. I hope I won't get trapped by them someday. Please share tips. Thank you
