Hello MYLOTTERS, I have been working in a manufacturing unit since last 12~13 years or so.I have always observed that whenever i have to take planned or unplanned leaves and go to BOSS to take the approval i have hesitation in my mind. Reason i don't know but i think the reason being: # I feel that BOSS won't approve the leave as work get suffered due to my absence he also feels it though he never says NO whenever i go to get it approved or ask him on phone in emergency. What do you feel? Do you also hesitate?

Hi sj When I was working in a IT company I was feeling the same like you. I was feeling hesitation every time I went asking about leave. But fortunately I got them every time. Now I am no more working their. And doing my own (small) work. And as my friends are my partners in it I feel no hesitation asking about leave to them, as they all know how I enjoy going different places.

Hello AKP, So you too had the same feeling. Oh yes thats what is the advantage of doing our business as you don't have to request your BOSSS for small things too. Sometime i really feel bad as when i am ill and still i have to phone BOSS and say I am not coming today though he never says NO but i feel awkward.

Then please don't phone your Boss but go to work, no matter how sick you are, you still must crawl to work.

@jenny crawl to workI try to avoid taking leaves even if i am ill but when illness is unbearable i phone my BOSS to take OFF. @ Khare yes i think so thats the reason why my BOSS never ever disapproved my leave whenever i required. This is what i feel and i should overcome it.

Sj, if you feel that way, then you better don't ever take leave from your company. What do you feel? All work and no play makes me a dull kitty. Do you also hesitate? Nah! I'm entitled to it. Why should I suffer? The Boss should be prepared for this.

how could you expect him to be your friend now when you complained to his boss about his online activities and made him suffer for a while till he could break the code to gain access to the system again?

Hi sjvg! You see if you have to take leave on some genuine ground, you should not feel hesitant at all. After all leave is allowed by an Organization, when employees need to attend something urgent or they are unwell. It is true that work may suffer in your absence but that could be attended to by your colleagues or your boss yourself. And if still there is some work pending you could devote some extra time to clear the backlog, when you rejoin your dutes. I understand that your co-workers also avail leave in emergency and you are nice enough to look after their work, do not you attend to their urgent work? In the same manner they could help in disposing of your work, when you are away on leave and this you could tell to your Boss, when you ask for leave. Remember, if you are on leave your Organization will not stop functioning without you or anyone else, the show goes on.

I did not know that you are handling a kind of very specialized job, which others could not perform so easily or for longer period. In that case, I can understand that it gets difficult to take leave or ask for it. Still I would say that when there is a genuine need, you should not feel hesitant for asking leave.

Hello deepak, Yes we should take leaves only when there is genuine reason for it we take leaves for every small things then normally a BOSS will also ask so many questions for approving it. DPK becuase i do track materials in the manufacturing unit and its a very complicated process and i have to follow rigorously with different suppliers for it so that production may not suffer due to shortages and its really a tough job most of the people don't be able to perform the same as i do it.Though my collegues manage to run show for 2~3 days in my absence due to stock we do keep but when it becomes leaves become longer they really need me desparately to come and join thats the reason which my BOSS also knows so he always want me to take lesser leaves which i do so he never disapproves my leaves but still i feel hesitant to go to him for taking approval.

Our top Management encouraged us to take our leave and as a matter of fact we all had to let the Management know in advance when we would want our annual leave. Taking leave is a necessity and I don't see any reason why anyone should feel bad about approaching a boss for it.

The MD had once called me to his office to give me an assignment and at that time I did mention that I would need go on holiday as every one needs some luxury once in a while and to that he promptly said (in his Swiss accent) that going on holiday is not a luxury but a necessity.

Hello allknowing, I think they encourage because they don't want to pay for those leaves. Also they think peple should consume their earned leaves in lean season. But here in my company we never have such lean periods so we are never asked to take leaves.

Well I am the person who take lesser leaves from work and that is why whenever I asked for leave my boss never hesitated to grant me, so I don't have such feelings but when I went for an interview I caught into the similar kind of feeling. Whether they will select me or not......:D

@ Isloo don't talk of interviews as no one has the confidence for being selected. I also take lesser leaves thats why i fear had i been taking more leaves then this fear would not have been there.*hehehe*

haha its only sometimes. i have only two at my disposal and i want one to be always there to help me.as dentistry is 4 handed and i become half efficient with none at my disposal,so they have leave only for once in a while and that too not together. and of course on public holidays, and festivals they have a day off.

Hi sjvg Hesitant in asking for your day off In that case the BOSS will simply say - you are not allowed any I never informed anyone until the day I wanted off and that morbing I call up the BOSS or my senior that I am unavailable for the day. But yes, for longer ones, I always put that up at least 10 days earlier so that they could arrange for someone if needed. I worked as a Teacher for most of the days of my working at office career. So the need of arrangements was essential as it was the students' careers at stake. Oh, I forgot, if you could also provide them with the arrangement plans (I did so), that would leave them no choice but give you the leave.

Hello sids, No its not necessary that if i am hesitant then my BOSS will not give the approval though he always give it. Thats bad i don't expect a teacher to be so unplanned.A teacher should always give time to the faculty to make arrangements when he/she is unavailable. I always inform the critical issues and pending works to my BOSS before going for leaves and it depends on my BOSS how he manages it in my absence though he contacts me on phone if he gets stuck anywhere.

Yes although it is nice to be in such a demand where the company/boss relies on us to always be there we do need to take time off from time to time. I always faced the same issue, where I worked offline. I was in upper management and although when it was my days off and or after work hours I would always get the calls with a great many work issues. So it was difficult for me to plan leave time because I knew they would be unhappy. In fact even during my vacation times, I was expected to log in to work and the calls were non-stop. It was hard each time I requested the time off, as I knew they although they at time would not hesitate to approve they would still expect me to be available. So yes I hesitated all the time, but still found the courage as it was only fair that I as an employee get time away as well as they did too.

Hello HWG, Thats right every employee has the right to take leaves to take time away from job so as to refresh himself/herself and for that he/she should not hesitate but should go to the BOSS with confidence to take approval. It happens when you are so much involved in the work and you are the important person in the organisation and BOSS knows that your absence can result in a loss then BOSS always want you not to take leaves and in my case i always hesitate to do so but against my expectation my BOSS has never denied for the leaves and has always approved them as he understands.

I think, having worked in your company for that many long years, you now now when is the peak season in manufacturing. That way, when you take a leave, you are sure that your absence will not be felt , but could just be filled in by another, while you are on leave. Do not hesitate, but try to have the approval of your boss. What is important is that you get to enjoy that leave, since you deserve one.

Hello SIMPLYD, Yes i have been here in the same company for so long but i have experienced every day we have lots of work pressure on us and it seems whole year we have a season and its really fortunate for us because people never get such organisation where they find less production than the demand. We hardly adhere 80% of the schedules.

Friend my senior was very good, sweet and beautiful girl her nature was very good so I not feel hesitation for saying anything to her and she passed my problems near the boss. I cant contact directly to the boss because we all are 200 employee in the Company and in every department one senior so we can tell them our problems and they contact with boss.

Hello eljayo, Thats right its our right to take leaves*hehehe* but we should try to take leaves only and only when there is a genuine reason taking leaves for small issues which can be resolved by not taking leave is not good at all.It makes our BOSS thinks twice while approving our leaves.

hi sj, You have been there with the company for a long time, is your boss so old as you or he is a new comer? It is always better to inform them in advance about your absence so that they can also have someone to back up your work. Why do you feel that Boss won't approve? If you speak up, he will surely understand your concern and the genuine reasons for taking leave from work, then he'll approve it as after all he / she is also a human being just like you & me. Anyways, you should never feel/ think that if I am not there, who'll take care it.... as you know for the boss, the show must go on (even if you are there/ or not there) So take leave and enjoy your holidays. If he's not approving, tell him you will be available on phone for emergency issues. I also get call from the Boss's (though he's aware of my absence) and he'll check how sooner I can reach office... but when I explain him my purpose of 'taking off' he turned out to be very considerate. I also make a point to depute someone who can help the boss(s) when I am not around.

Hello Viju, Yes i have been with this company for a long time and my BOSS is here much longer than me.I also feel that it is the reason as he also says that he want the show must go on in my absence too so he always contact me on phone during my leaves and i always interact with him during my offs unlike most of the people in my company but he is very understanding and easily understands my concern and never says NO whenever i ask for off from him.

hi sj, i understand you are a very sincere worker who takes less leave, more dedicated (attending work even if you are sick)and above all a very supportive hand to your boss to 'run the show' successfully. But somewhere you have mentioned in this discussion that your boss didn't give you the increment as you expected it should be. I think, now it is time for you to think of 'moving' on and you really need a change. I am also a long time employee in my company, but during the recession time, most of my old and senior colleagues were asked to quit, the reason being it costs the co. too much to maintain them (!)... i don't know fortunately (or unfortunately) I was given a new role and based on my performance I even got promotion as well.......

I am exactly at your position right now. I always wanted to have a leave of absence but my boss, I think my boss will not approve it because i am really needed in the office. But, don't you think it is unfair? I mean I really need a break from daily routine.

Hello RMENDOZA, Yes it is unfair we should take a break from daily routines to make these daily routines more enjoyable for future. Thats the reason i have thought of going out of station for 2~3 days every year and this year i have planned to go to SHIMLA nice hill station in INDIA.

-hi, I also have the same hesitation but at least everytime I asked it, as long as it doesn't fall on the busy days, then am good to take my vacation. But yeah, there are really times that surprises just come out and you just have to deal with work while on vacation, but as much as possible, our boss doesn't want to disturb or spoil us when anyone from the team is on vacation. He will do the best he can to resolve whatever comes up, worst case would be to call that someone on leave..

Hello jomarie2011, Also in mine caes too my BOSS has a good understanding he always try to resolve the issues himself in my absence and if he can't do it then he phones me and asks me to resolve it. He has never disapproved my leave application but i don't know why i hesitate to take approval.
