The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recently released a report stating that 88% of American children and adults eat too much salt! But not only are they eating more than the recommended daily intake amount (2,300 mg/day), they're eating 53% MORE salt than the recommended amount. High salt consumption has been linked to high blood pressure, heart attacks, and stroke. Just a clarification for those who are unfamiliar: common table salt is also called sodium chloride and contains the chemicals sodium and chloride; the recommended amount of 'salt' is referring to the amount table salt eaten per day. Here are some common foods and their sodium content: -1 raw apple = 1 mg -1 plain bagel = 561 mg -1 slice white bread = 153 mg -1 cup of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal = 275 mg -3 oz of bacon = 621 mg -2 table spoons of Ranch salad dressing = 287 mg I found these stats on www.alsosalt.com/sodiumcontent Do you have high blood pressure? Do you limit your salt intake? Will you think about changing your diet after reading this information?

Thank you very much for sharing the information. I do have high blood pressure problem and have been taking medicines for that daily. And, yes, I stay away from salty foods. And, another thing I am very care ful about is coconut. Coconut aggravates my blood pressure very much. I stay away from any thing that has coconut in it, fruit flesh or juice.

I'm sorry about your health problems greenline. I hope that changes in your lifestyle and eating habits will eventually help you control your high blood pressure problem so you can get off the medicine. That's too bad you have to stay away from coconut though, I'm obsessed with coconut water. I think it tastes super delicious!

Thanks for this link and advice. I suffered from high blood pressure as complication of my high blood sugar level but now that I was able to trim down my blood sugar level and have it on borderline,my BP is normal. I cut down salt consumption as well as my sweets.

Congratulations EdnaReyes! Are you pre-diabetic or do you have diabetes - I'm just guessing from your comment that you had high blood sugar levels? It's so hard to change your diet, that's really impressive that you were able to get your blood sugar level and BP to normal. Personally, I think cutting down salt consumption is harder than cutting down on sweets. So many things have salt in it, and you can even taste it half the time!

It is true that too much salt is not good for health. In China there're many styles of cuisine, some of which use various of ingredients such as hot pepper, wild pepper etc and a lot of salt. People just like that. I won't put so many ingredients when I cook at home but I don't hate them. I was in Hong Kong for business in the middle of this month and I found that the diet there was very bland. It was a bit difficult for me to eat, but the restaurant owner told us that they eat very little salt for healthy.
