Is it possible to run two operating systems at a time?

Now I know what everyone is going to say.. "Yeah you can just partition your hard drive and load the other system on the other part" that is not exactly what I mean. What I'm specifically interested in is running more then one operating system(even the same one) and plugging in another monitor and mouse/keyboard so that two people could make use of one single computer. I ended up buying a 6 core processor with 8 gigs of ram and the computer never goes above 20% use unless I am gaming. I would love to get a second set of peripherals and just run two computers in one. Side by side.

I don't think it is possible : there is only one keyboard controller and one keyboard interrupt on a computer OS, and even a second OS running in a virtual machine on the same computer has to use them. If you connect 2 keyboards on the same computer you will in theory never be able to type the same key at the same moment on both keyboards, though you will be able to use them alternatively.

I have not said anything else meenad, as I speak of a second OS. I began by "I don't think it is possible", not for the second OS but for the possibility to have two users working on two keyboards at the same moment on the same computer.

I have to apologize : it is possible on Linux to have several users on the same computer, as Petersum says in his box. I have found this link giving all the details on how to do it for 6 users working on the same computer : http://linuxgazette.net/124/smith.html

I think it is possible. You can try use virtual machine software. So, for example, you use windows as your main operating system. And then, you can run linux operating system by virtual machine while windows operating system still running. Try that one, but it is not a free software.

Virtualbox is available for free.

On Linux you can have up to eight users on the one system, totally unaware of each other, and not sharing any visible resources. Possible but not necessarily practical! It requires USB keyboards and mice, so you have to somehow get at least 16 USB ports (Yes, it's possible). Eight video cards is where most people will run out of slots! OK, you don't want 8, but two or three users is feasible. There is a Linux-Howto describing this setup somewhere. You'll have to search for it.

I think this is more of what I'm interested in. Basically I was wanting to have two monitors facing opposite ways and having two sets of wireless keyboard/mice and be able to have two people browse the web off of one machine. My computer is never tasked with simple things and my internet is also capable of having more the one machine browsing the web at the same time. what I am curious about is the fact that you say 8 video cards. Can the video card not multitask on two operating systems or are they completely stuck on only one. I could easily fit two video cards in my computer so if I could purchase a second video card/monitor/keyboard mouse instead of buying a completely seperate computer to accomplish the same task I think that that would be pretty cool.

Yes it is very easy, you can run more then one operating system on your computer at the same time. You will need to install "Virtual Box" : http://www.virtualbox.org OR "VM Ware" : http://vmware.com I personally like "Virtual box" from Sun Microsystems, because it is very easy to use and very user friendly.

to run multiple OS at the same you can use virtualization such as virtualbox, but i got the impression that what you really want to do is using your computer for multiple users. Some of the responder have already answer if you're using linux you can do that easily.. if you want to run windows as OS you can try to look at this site: http://www.userful.com/products/userful-multiplier

it is not possible to work 2 operating systems in one computer at a time because a motherboard can support one os at a time

The big question is why? Several people sitting on top of each other (monitors limited by cable length) sounds cramped. One crashes and brings the others down, maybe? Your high spec computer just emphasises how little power we really need for most ordinary jobs. An old 1GHz pc on WinXP will still type letters/emails and surf the Net.

The easiest way to split your computer would be into work stations here is a basic how to http://www.labnol.org/software/tutorials/two-users-share-one-computer-work-different/1966/ or http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/237498-34-users-computer-tutorial-simplified and as others have mentioned in posts above Linux allows for multiple stations within the same cpu it is possible to link several monitors and peripherals it is time consuming and it requires some patients but it is possible.

Yes! It is possible. Simultaneously open or working harmoniously if you want or like that. Mac users knows that. Consumer level software applications like Parallel, VMWares, VirtualBox (also available in other Operating Systems like MS Windows and LInux (by Sun Microsystems maker of Java). These software applications mainly called as Virtual Machines. With this kind of applications doesn't need a separate peripherals like keyboards or monitor. Though of course you can have another monitor optionally. You can use KVM boxes or other devices to have additional peripherals or monitors, if you like to share with one CPU with another computer user or more users.

You can run multiple operating systems at the same time on your PC.You need to get VMware Player for that.

On reading the responses we get different views. I have not come across a computer having more than one os. there may be more users but os to be used at a time will be one.

I think it is not possible. There is no two connecting points(except of SMPS)to a hard drive. I do not know the latest news.

for your question on 2 operating systems in one computer yes.I have tried that one by simply partitioning the drives and you can shift from OS to another from time tp time. On having 2 computers in one unit , I tried, adding memory modules that were from another computer which means that all the files in my other computer were placed in my new unit. So I ended up having 4 partitions. Its functioning very well so far. From that time I combined it, I have not encountered any problem. There were only some modifications I made in the set up so as not to entangled the mesh of network :-D. It's fun to tinker the details of the computer. I'm not an expert yet , but I plan to take another course on it early next year. I still have to pass the competency assessment for the one I have just finished.

That was surprising. The only thing I know is that you can have 2 operating system on your pc but you can only run 1 at a time, if you want to load the other OS you need to reboot the pc then choose that operating system to run in your computer. anyways your computer's specification is amazing I just wished I could afford those specification so that I can update my netbook or buy a new one of higher specs.
