On a recent trip to Ararat Victoria here in Australia I visited an old historical Mental Institute and was very interested in the old kitchen, looking at what they had to work with it made me wonder what the food would have been like, and it also makes me grateful for our modern day gadgets....

This makes me think of my grandmother's old kitchen. She had one of those cast iron wood-burning stoves. The house was heated with a centrally located wood-burning heater. My grandparents lived in an old house and when I was a kid they still had an outhouse. I'd be visiting and have to get up and go outside in the nighttime. Brrrr in winter time. They had a well in the yard and that was where we got our water. Chickens in the yard so when grandmother wanted to cook a chicken she just had to go out in the yard and get one. Eventually my granddad put in a bathroom and by the time I was grown he had built a new house with all the "modern" conveniences. And then there were no more chickens in the yard. People today don't know what they've missed with these "sterile" chickens today.

Oh yes I remember the old out houses, with no light either made it very scary at night...yes I don't know if many people today could cope with a kitchen like that, I think people did it hard in those days...

That s definitely something worth considering. I wonder about the rest of the institute. What did the patients endure? What an amazing piece of history.

Yes I wonder if it was any cleaner than that, might have been a few sick patients but then maybe they were more immuned in those days...

I think it would be a lot of boiled foods, as that is easy to cook in a pot on top of a fire.

Even the difference between the way I grew up cooking and the way it can be done now is amazing.

This old kitchen really reminds me of my grandparent's old home. Where, i will seen my grandmother spending many hours preparing food for me and the other family members. It takes longer time, to prepare even the simple menu for lunch and dinner. I feel lucky that our modern life was fulled with modern gadgets. Which makes the preparation of our daily food goes simple and easy.

We have a couple of old Mental INstitutions around here too.. one of them St. Hubert's is haunted with the Ghost of Nurse Jane who you can hear walking around the second floor and moaning. There is another one where I went to university that was renovated into the new community college just a couple of years ago.. and they left the bars on the windows!
