beggars: would you give a penny? or not?

November 16, 2011 5:06am CST
I was on the bus terminal earlier today, and I saw a man who is giving out papers which says he is a patient of a local hospital and is in need of financial help for medications. It has a signature from a doctor. As I saw the man he looks really sick, and looks like cerebral palsy to me. I handed him a 20 peso bill and other passengers gave him money too. When he left, he went directly into a guy who sells cigarettes and bought some with the exact 20 peso bill that I gave him. I felt so stupid to fall into his trick. And I said, that there are really many people who take advantage of others generosity.

When I was young, I occasionally gave money to beggars. But recently, when I found out that beggars were actually fake, i stopped giving them money. I only gave food and beverages. Most beggars are under a syndicate that tells and orders them to beg on the street. Once a beggar has money, they will give it to their head. This is illegal. People are trying to make money out of using beggars. It is really sad.

Seriously, its not a good world anymore. Due to such loosers, we dont feel like helping others, some of whom might be in an actual need of help. It has happened to me as well. So I dont give any money to beggar untill I am completely sure they need genuine help.

a pleasant day phoevy21, in our place here, we somehow learned our lesson in giving alms to beggars. as we also saw some beggars who take advantage of others generosity. same as you have seen to that man. aside from that, we have encountered one situation, when we have had given a food to a couple of street children who begged for food, that food we have given to them was a home made food we have done. we were surprised then, when they asked, we want more, and this time, could it be pizza instead of this that you have given. after hearing that from them, i feel so terribly mad. and after all those things happened, i have said to myself, that things will not happen again. as i will just give help to those charitable institution instead of giving it straight away to those who walk along the road and ask for alms.

giving a penny is good it shouws our kind heart and a helping nature towards the beggars. If its one or two we can handle, however if so many pennies are given for lakhs of beggars then it can make us one in them.So should see while we are giivng.

I understand what you feel. What's important is that you gave it from the heart and with good intentions. It maybe true that there a lot of swindlers out there but don't be discourage in helping others. There are far more people who needs your help. Let the rule of karma take effect to those bad people.

most times I don't because I feel they just want to buy a bottle of something but if I thought someone was hungry I would offer to buy them a meal, it is sad to see but its not nice to be lied to either..

I used to give alms to beggars years ago, but nowadays I don't. In the coming of age, I have develop this ability to feel their sincerity. There area a lot of people using this trick to get some cash but I won't fall for it anymore. Just to share, this maybe a little of topic but here it goes, one time I was on a trip going to another city, I was riding the public transport then suddenly, a full grown muscular intimidating beggar looking man came, he was asking alms, and he demanded with a price, he exclaimed " Give me 10 bucks because I want to eat, I'd rather ask alms than mug people! " It was clear to me that he was scaring the people. Just before he collects his 1st 10 bucks, I exclaimed in return, " Get the hell out of here before I beat the crap out of you! " I made sure he was able to see my eyes and I bet he knew how sincere I am. Then he left. Peacefully without a word.

Oh dear, they are really good when it comes to this. Some people abusing other's generosity and that is really sad. They never knew that those people who are giving me small amount, 10,20 or even coins are working to earned that money. duh!

I used to give some to beggars but now, not anymore. I always see them using it the wrong way or like you said, they make used of others generosity. So I choose to not giving them.. rather than ending up feeling bad..

i won't give money to these people. They pretend needing help to cheat money. If they really need help, they can ask help from goverment and it's goverment resposibility to help weak people.

Taking advantage is least to say.. I used to give coins around everywhere I saw a man in need. I have a relatively good statute so it didn't mean much for me. Until I found out beggars made more money than working people. Even coins pile up to sums that sounded outrageous to me. Plus the fact that 90% impress you with false stories. Now I gave up giving money, I give food, clothes and other things to poor families, I volunteer for various things. I'll never give money again because I and others that did and do encouraged begging instead of working for many that can go and work for a living. If you wanna feel good about giving money you can turn to some organizations that usually check the background stories for gatherings and make sure the money is used as intended.

That's really so unacceptable to hear. That's why sometime I don't really give out money to anyone most especially if I know to myself that the beggar can still work. There's a lot of people who are asking for alms when in fact they can still work. I don't really care if they show off their medical certificate, as long as they can work I don't give them money.
