I am using Windows XP. It takes much time to open when I click an Icon in the desktop. Why? What may be the reason for the slow? I defragmented the system, also scanned the whole computer using a good updated antivirus(Kaspersky). my computer has 2GB RAM ALSO 150GB Hard disc.Pentium processor 1.7GHz. I installed UBUNTU also using a computer known person. I purchsed this computer in march 2005. I cannot understand the cause for the slow.

The fact that you are running Kaspersky on it may be a reason,I know Kaspersky is great but it also uses a lot of resources.Try to save all the files that you deem important, grab a version of XP with SP3 and format all you partitions. After the new Win instalation try to install only programs that req low resources.I don't know is you processor a dual core?If it's a single core at 1.7GHz frequency,Kaspersky and other programs with high resource demand may be a lot to handle.

when was the last time you installed you Win?It may be the problem, try not to run Win 7 on a single core 1.7Ghz processor,I doubt you will get results.Don't take this the wrong way but a lot has happen since 2005 regarding technology, try not to use new and "flashy" they tend to eat a lot of resources.I not sure try Ubuntu gives you problems,if it's something tehnical I think it's your HDD that is acting up.

The computer is slow before installing Kaspersky. My computer is not dual core. It is 1.7GHz PENTIUM processor. To run Ubuntu 1GB RAM is necessary. Mine is 2 GB. There is a lot free space in it.Capacity of "C" drive is 20GB,"D" is 35GB, "E" drive IS 47GB "F"and "G"are CD drives, "H"drive has got 19GB, rest is UBUNTU operating system .Total 150GB

to make your computer to work faster you must stop some useless services you don`t use.You can open your task manager and go to processes and you will see all the processes that are running on your PC at that moment. Then you can try to stop some of these services you never use but first read a lot on internet to see exactly what you need and what you don`t need .To access the services you will have to type services.msc on Run. You can read more info about the services here : http://www.optimizingpc.com/optimize/windowsservices.html Or search for more information on internet. This is a dangerous thing to do as it may make your computer to stop working if you turn off an essential service but if you read a lot and you know what you are doing then your computer will work much faster if you only allow the services you need to run.

Have you enabled the CPU caches in your BIOS ? Also the PCI latency parameter may be to low : if it is at 16, put it at 32 or 64. To see if it comes from your HDD, you can burn an ISO image of a small Linux working in RAM only. The latest Puppy Linux releases are compatible with slackware or ubuntu packages : http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm

Friend at least once you should formatted the disk because virus may be attacked in your system. Windows XP is good Operating system. RAM may be increased but 2 GB is also good. Ohhh you install UBUNTU may be due to this system is slow because 2 Operating system in one PC and UBUNTU takes more space.

Mine is not a Virus problem.;because I formatted and saw whether there is any difference. There is enough space in Hard disk to run 2 Operating systems(15GB HDD & PENTIUM PROCESSOR & 2 GB RAM

If you go ahead with a fresh install you should see right away what the computer speed is like. If you do not install windows fresh then have you tried a restore point?

There are so many reason to make your computer running so slow. Check the free size of your partition that you use to install windows. Maybe there are not so much free space in it. But, if you have many free space, look at your installed software. So many installed software, can cause your computer running so slow. Hope this can help you.

I am not a computer experts but I will tell you what I had been told..I had XP on my computer and I loved it and never wanted to change but my techy said that all the windows have to be updated because after a certain date which has now long gone, patches that need to be installed for each stop being sent, so I had to upgrade to Windows 7..now that techy is trialling Windows 8 which means I guess when the date the patches stop for 7 I will have to go to 8..so what may have happened is xp is outdated now so maybe your computer really needed something the regular patch thingy wouls have fixed...as I said I am not an expert but with technology unfortunately they make you upgrade regularly.

Mostly it can be issue of less hard disk space.. how big your C drive is and how much free space in it? first try to keep 5-10 gb free space in your C drive.. and also remove unnecessary startup files or toolbars.. sometimes it makes system slower.. to remove your files from startup.. go to your start menu.. and in run type "msconfig" you can see startup tab there.. remove unnecessary startup links..

i suffer that problem too before, and i fix it by re-installing the last program that i install, maybe because what i install is not completed or a power interruption that immediately happened while on the process of installation.... or incomplete shutdown of the Operating System that do it not once but many times and some corrupted bytes exist in one of the sectors inside the harddrive....

Hello,i think there is some problem with your ram..Generally Ram is the one responsible for maintaining the speed in your computer...So according to me you have very good ram..2 GB ram is good..You will get nice speed..But you said you are not getting speed means there may be some problem with your ram..Try to replace your ram..i think this will help you!!! Happy Mylotting!!!
