My boyfriend is handicapped, he is on disability and wears a brace on his leg. In the winter he falls down all the time and hurts himself. He applied for handicap transport and they refused him because his doctor filled out the request and she is an MD, They want a specialist. So now he has to go to specialist he will be seeing a physio therapist for his shoulder which he just hurt when he fell and he will ask him to fill out another paper for him so he can try again.

Wow that is just crazy..Here where I live, If you have a medical card you are able to get free cab rides to and from any and every doctors appointments. They are also a bus that comes once a week that will take you where you need even if you don't have a medical card like me. For a dollar each time I get on the bus I can go to town and do shopping for $2 to $3 a trip when if family or friends do it it will cost me $10 to $20..which is just plain crazy.. but when you don't own a car it is hard to get things done.

Actually the bus is also for handicapped people. It even has a large space that will fit up to 4 wheelchairs if needed. The ramp comes down and the driver of my bus is great he helps everyone on and off..helps with putting their groceries on the bus and everything for them and helps take them off as well..He isn't a stranger for me..is the reason I didn't put him in the other discussion about strangers doing something nice for you lately..lol

that is great, especially for people who are not handicapped and can use it.

Its a bummer but that is how the system works. They have to be assured your boyfriend really needs the transport. It is this way because so many try to con the government and get things for free that they shouldn't be getting. And lood at the con artists/medical clinics that took so much money from the government in years past by sending in false paperwork and getting paid for things they didn't need or use. Operations that weren't preformed, etc.

they have all the proof they need, he is on disablity pension and they have all his Xrays and reports from various specialists about his condition. They are just being pig headed plan and simple.

I have heard such horror stories. I was SOOOO lucky. Got on right away and only had to be on this weird local medical insurance plan for about a year until my Medicare kicked in. Very lucky.

Personally this is getting rediculous in some of the things they are requiring anymore to give help like this. You almost have to be completely immobile in a wheel chair it seems. I know that it does not make much sense, and with all the Health issues I have it is impossible for me as well. Makes me wonder what they are requesting and accepting anymore, and why are they so picky in this area, when they continue to not check people getting Welfare and SSI to see if they are really deserving of it. Seems like they got things all wrong some where.

its a numbers game I read somewhere that they deny 90 percent of applications because they know that most people won't appeal and they save money that way.

I am sorry your boyfriend is suffering and falls all the time. It must be so scary to know something like that could happen any time you go out. As for the application for wheeltranspo as it is called in Ontario, you know averybody has to meet the criteria since public funds need to pay for it. It is really a true comfort for people who need it but the Government has to make sure only qualified people can avail themselves of this service. I hope your boyfriend is going to be successful.

That's awful that they will make Matt jump through hoops just to get transportation services. They can tell he is almost totally helpless. That's just crazy that the word of an MD isn't reliable enough. What if he didn't have a specialist? He'd have to find one I guess. That is just so backward.

yes he would have to go back to the md and get her to give him a referral for a specialist. But He went to the place where they made his special boot and brace and got one of the doctors there to fill out the paper for him.
