Living without power

I've read an article on the web that a man living in Northern Ireland lived without electricity for some 29 years. They showed a picture of him (he seems to be in his 60s or 70s) in his little hamlet home which is quite small and enclosed. I was just thinking that this really entails - that there is no heater during deep winters to provide the warmth at night and no fan to provide the breeze during hot summers. Perhaps wood in the fireplace but that would burn out after a while. Having to sleep early (which in itself is not a bad thing) and depending on nature ot provde the daylight. I thought it was rather admirable especially in this current age and time where much of everything depends on power supply like electricity. I probably can't even live one day without electricity!! However, imagine that a country's power supply can be the target of their enemies during times of war. I think that will quite incapacitate a country's function. Think for a moment some things that one can still perform efficiently without electricity. Something that one can still achieve like brushing one's teeth without the electric toothbrush. Reading a book instead of going onto the PC or be on kindle. Walking a bit more instead of hoping onto a bus or taxi. Can you think of any other actions that we can take greater ownership in without the press of a button (i.e. without electricity)?

hello there.it is amazing to find your discussion here and it felt nice reading your post. when i was still young,my mother brings me to my grandparents in an upland area where there is no electricity at all.life there is very simple and we sleep as early as six o'clock in the evening shortly after dinner. in this modern era where prices of commodities continue to rise, it is a good idea to save money by being prudent in the use of electricity.though it is good to live simple and live without electricity at all just like the man from Northern Ireland, life today will be difficult if we remove the use of electricity.with this,i think it is now high time for us to embrace the use of renewable energy source like solar generated light bulbs.

Thanks for your reply and the suggestion of embracing the use of renewable energy source. We need to look after Mother Earth (Gaia) and not deplete its resources too quickly.

Living without electricity might possible, it depends on where we live. If you live in the countryside or rural, all matters relating to electric lighting was replaced by a manual like the lamp is replaced by wood or oil, to cook with wood, to travel by using the transport of animals and we still wear them until now on. Previously, we do not know the name of electricity and humans can live and survive. About half the earth's population still do not use electricity, so you can imagine, how natural our previous lives were or are?

I think there is a lesson to be learnt of not being too dependant on the use of electricity. Like previously mentioned, the supply of electricity sustains life and the lack of it causes our life to deteriorate. The human race needs to look beyond electricity to sustain our own lives.

Maybe I can live without electricity for a day or two but longer like that lieka week or more it will be hard for sure. But if there is no choice to live wothout electricity, maybe I should try to cope with it to survive in life.

I guess the human spirit for survival is quite fantastic and perhaps living without electricity can be overcome over a period of time. Maybe with much pain. Like re-setting to factory settings, ha.

Its a remarkable and admirable feat. Its a mark of endurance and putting up with hardship. It shows a lot of grit and character. There are a lot we can perform without electricity provided we are ready to put up with hardship like this admirable person. But we are so used to electricity being a part and parcel of our lives that we can't think of a world without it.

I can't decide whether that is inspiring or crazy. Actually, I think that it is a bit both. Power is an essential tool of living. Once electricity has been invented, it is not going to be something that is going to be reversed. It is our life, we are going to really live with it, enjoy a lot of parts of life. That is just not going to change. Books are the obvious thing that would be about the only form of entertainment. Conversation would be another thing but that would really be something that would grow tiring after a while. Plus we will run things out of talking about. Electricity is essential. Less than one percent of the population who are accustomed to using it will die without it. Or riot. That is the truth of the matter. That is reality.

I could still remember during my childhood years, perhaps I was 8 years old that time, I could still recall we are using kerosene lamp at night because we have no electricity yet in our village. Life is so easy in those years, we have no TV set, no refrigerators totally no electricity! But we lived happily bracing natures gift we had. Now, we have everything but still people tend to ask for more not knowing whatever consequences, just plainly wanting more not knowing risks. I still love the good old days. Great simple life with full of real happiness.

The whole world's days will be horrible without electricity. We cannot make use of our computer,TV,fridge and other items without electricity. Indirectly electricity plays an important role in our life. Can you think a world without the use of electricity (the world with darkness) ?

Wow, I really admire him that he was able to live that way, but I guess he was born and raised this way, so it wasn't a big problem for him. On the other hand, society in which we live in today is impossible without electricity. Just think how much it helped us in both the communications, medicine, science and a lot of other positive things.

This is an interesting story. Personally, I can't see myself living without electricity for 29 years. I might go as much a 2-3 days without electricity but not 29 years. I would probably go crazy if I had to live without it for that long! I applaud him for doing so. I agree that there are some things we can do to cut down on electricity use. I don't necessarily think electric toothbrushes are necessary even though they may be easier on your teeth more so than a regular toothbrush. There are a lot of people using the PCs or tablets to read books etc. I prefer to still read the old fashion way because I don't have a tablet or kindle, and I can't always depend on my PC either. A computer can malfunction and be down for some time until I can get it fix or replace it.
