My kids have HORRIBLE breath :(

I have an 8 and 4-year-old. For the past year or so they have had some horrible breath. It didn't matter how good they brushed their teeth, or how good I brushed their teeth, tongue, top of mouth, gums, lips, etc, within 5 minutes they had horrible breath again. So we went to the dentist to get their teeth cleaned thinking that maybe it would help and according to the dentist he's not sure why they have bad breath because their teeth are great and they don't have gingivitis or anything like that. Anyone know, what I can do to help with their bad breath. OTHER than going to the doctor.

its a halitosis i think. It came from the digestive system. They should eat healthy food and avoid spicy. Give them fruits in the morning to freshen up their stomach.. teach them to walk everyday to ensure their bowel movement..Sometimes slow bowel movement causes bad breath too.

Well, If it has nothing to do with their teeth and mouth, then you will have the need to be worried. I heard from somewhere before that if a person has bad breath even when he or she has perfectly fine teeth, this means that there is something wrong with their inner organ. I'm in no way joking and you should get them to appropriate doctor to diagnose the problem. it's no longer what a dentist can handle. Actually, there is also another small cause for bad breath, which is not drinking enough water. Of course I hope it's the second one. Wishes you the best.

Thanks for your response. I'll start with the water and after about a week or so see where we are at! The dentist also mentioned that it might be something in their gut I just thought it was weird that BOTH of them have it and not just one or the other.

Maybe it is genetic. Do any of your relatives, on either side, have a similar problem?

Not that I know of. Not my parents, my sister or her children and the same way on my husbands side.

Actually I am not a doctor or expert. But bad the first cause for bad breath is teeth. In brushing teeth in addition to the tooth brush we must also encourage children to use dental floss. The dental floss thread helps clean the area between the teeth which the brush cannot reach. If the teeth are ok, the next thing is the tongue. Plaque on the tongue has to be cleaned with an appropriate instrument, or maybe the handle of the toothbrush. If the plaque is difficult to remove, you can use glycerine to soften them. If the cause is not both of these then, it could be time to give the children treatment for worms. Also like an earlier comment drinking lots of water is important.

They do brush and use floss twice a day everyday. They also brush their tongue until anything white is off of it. I would have never thought about them possibly having worms. I know it's half way common in children. Thanks for your comment. I'll start with water and go from there!

I'm not an expert. But from what I know, let me tell you these things. 1.A bad odor may be of not eating at correct time, if they cut any meals like breakfast/lunch/supper, it may cause the odor. 2. Ulcer may cause bad odor. 3. Drinking not enough water, and eating not enough fruits. 4. Worms in intestines may cause it. You can consult your doctor for it and get a medicine prescribed. Nothing bad will happen even if they have that medication without any worms in the intestine at all. 5. Tell them to eat fresh food. Not the packed items and refrigerated food too. Let them get well soon :)

Stomach or gastrointestinal problems. Have their pediatrician check it out. A lot of internal things can cause bad breath. Hope you find out soon.

I was trying to prevent having to take them to the doctor, but we might have to go after all. I'm going to check out doing water and fresh fruits first and see how that goes! Thanks!

Hello, i have a hint for you, if you keep their toothbrushes uncovered and close to the toilet, its possible for them to be covered with bacterial life released to the air when you flush, and that can cause bad breath too. Yet i still advise you to check a doctor for digestive problems of another source for the problem. Hope they get better soon

It is not just about dental health. It has lot to do with their food intake. More refined food like cookies or raw gralic can all cause problems. I would suggest taking more fruits like pineapple to see how it works. Pineapple has the power to cleanse the body and many naturalists recommend it for detox. Additionally, lots of water and fresh lemon juice.

Sorry, but after reading your post, the only thing I´d do is to take them to a doctor. Bad breath means infection. The doctor must even want to do some testing to see if they have parasites of some kind.

Hello, jenna.there's a same problem with my child.I have an 4-year-old like you, every morning he has a very bad breath when he get up,but I'm not concerned about, and it's not linked with certain health risks.I think this is normal,it may be caused by normal human digestive. There're so many things unexplained in humanbeings ,some of which can be ignored as long as they don't affect our life.
