I actually do taekwondo, not karate. I did take karate about 14 years ago at a summer program at one of our local universities, but then got into dance and did not have time for both. Now that I am out of school and have my own business, I have more time for martial arts. I only just started about two months ago, though, so I am only on my orange belt (well, not quite yet - I graduate to that this coming Tuesday). I decided to take up martial arts first because I was offered a free lesson, and after finding out it was good for your self-confidence, I decided to pursue it further since I've never been a confident person. So far it has helped a good deal and I have noticed a difference in my focus in other areas of my life. Like you said, self-defense is another part of martial arts, and I have been learing that aspect as well, though I have never had to actually use it in real life. It's always good to know what to do, however, and I really enjoy the weapons and board breaking training.

Defending ourselves needs a lot of courage. After you develop that braveness. You can learn some very basic techniques to get yourself out of any dangerous situation. For example, getting your hands released when some one has grabbed it so tightly. - For that you can pull your hand in the direction where your opponent's thumb is. Because on the other side, there will be his/him 'four fingers' which will make it to relieve ourselves. It is not necessary to learn entire Karate/ Kung Fu/ Judo. But, if you are interested means, go ahead and train yourself.

Karate is many things one being self defense. It has many blocks and discipline techniques for defending ourselves. Another method depending on the person is judo. This too is excellent. Also learning how to run very quickly after saying, oh look at the naked man (or woman) behind you, while throwing money on the ground as you go very fast, is good for self defense. :-)
