Unplug your appliances when not in use

A lot of us know probably are aware that leaving appliances, gadgets or anything that uses electricity plugged in the socket even when we're not using them still consumes a very small amount of electricity. But add everything up, each small amount may perhaps become significant. Some even say that leaving them plugged in may be a fire hazard. But why are we not unplugging them? Is it out of laziness?

I rarely unplug my appliances and only switch them off instead.

I only unplug those appliances that have easy to reach sockets, the rest I also just turn off. But I do unplug them if I'll be gone for more than a day, though.

Yeah, I think it should apply to all of us. It's really the prudent thing to do.

No, just out of lack of education and out of habit, nothing more

Even educated people are sometimes prone to laziness.

Lack of education does not mean stupid, just not that educated in that area... many will argue taht leaving the apliance plugged in does not consume electricity, until you prove it to them... some people just can't be bothered...

I think laziness is one reason, I rarely unplug my television and electric fans when it's not in use since I am sure to be using it later. Appliances that are never unplugged are just refrigerators though. It consumes a lot of electricity.

I believe it is laziness. I think we really know that we should unplug them but we sometimes don't bother doing it. I'm trying to be un-lazy though and unplugging as much of as I could each time :)

With my luck I would break it. Why don't they put thing on the wall like the other one. I have a zillion of these adapt boxes that sit there and hum at me. Maybe I'll just pull the handle on the big scary box and stop it all, didn't like that frozen hamburger meat anyway.

And why exactly do you have a lot of those adapter boxes? Are they all necessary? And I presume your scary box is the main outlet that switches off the whole power in your house, right? Well, I guess that's the fastest way to unplug everything.

Well I don't have that many I suppose but I do notice in the stores every time you buy something electric it has one in side the box. A lot of electrical things these days seem to work on battery type power that is safe. Why not have an outlet for everything if they kept the rating the same of course it is probably too late for that now?

Yes we really have to unplug them when leaving and after using to save some electricity and to avoid accident that it may cause.

Yeah, it's actually a win-win situation. You avoid and untoward thing from happening and at the same time you save on electricity :)

Hmm, I am lucky enough to have a father who has installed a switch for every socket in our living room. So all I have to do is switch them off when not in use or when I am about to sleep. I wish he also did the same to the other parts of the house. I do unplug the airconditioner because sometimes I hear it making humming sounds even when it's turned off.

It makes life easier, doesn't it? :) Sometimes pulling the cords out of the sockets can be a drag. I envy you for having a dad that knows electrical stuff. It can be a bit costly to pay for an electrician nowadays :)

I have not been unplugging the electric appliances. Now I will certainly try to unplug the appliances so that I can save the electricity. I was surprised initially when I first learned that we can save electricity by unplugging the electric appliances.

It's not actually a big savings, though, but if you have lots of appliances or stuff plugged, and you make it a habit of unplugging them when they're not in use, then the savings may add up a bit:)

Yep, many of us have ten or more plugs plugged in our house. Thus, unplugging and plugging them every time we leave and returned to the house would really be a bit troublesome. Of course it is best to unplug them, money is not a problem but fire is XD

Yes, it's true. With so many stuff plugged in, it would be quite of a task to unplug all of them before leaving. Actually, eventually it would still be a problem with money if a fire broke out :)

Even a pilot light consumes electricity no matter how insignificant the amount of electricity is. But it could add a bit if lots of your appliances with pilot lights are plugged in. And like you said, nothing's cheap anymore so any savings we could get helps :)

Even when we were still very young, my mom would always remind me and my siblings to turn off the appliances AND to unplug them from the sockets when not in use, especially when we are about to go out of the house. It has been one of the earliest and most prominent things that my mom had taught us then and that I still keep in mind up to now. So as much as possible, I always oblige myself in accomplishing this simple yet significant task. Somehow it has already become an automatic thing for me to do to unplug any appliance before leaving any room I had been to. I think some are still unable to do this unplugging due to forgetfulness or being in quite a rush in leaving the room or the house. It really takes a certain amount of getting used to to be able to be always reminded of doing this task.

And also some discipline on the part of us. I think we all know the importance of unplugging appliances and stuff when they're not being used, but some of us are somewhat lazy to do so :)

I am also guilty of this. I do not unplug extension cords whenever I do not use them. I figured that if my iphone and laptop is not attached to them then I would not really waste electricity. I just recently found out that this is wrong. my mother told me what was the right thing to do and stuff. So now, I unplug my extension cord always! Happy mylotting.

Mother always knows best . Unplugging electrical stuff could really be a hassle. But I guess there's no hassle-free way to save on electricity or prevent untoward incidents of an electrical nature
