How do you enjoy the holidays without spending money?

I love the Christmas season. But usually, I end up broke after the holidays. If I go out to the mall, I'd sure to spend. If I go to some new place nearby, surely it will entail money. Even celebrating at home with your friends and loved ones (holding a reunion)do take money to organize. Unless a friend/relative sponsors every thing, I'd end up broke. How I love it when I was young. I get to receive presents, eat for free and go to amusement parks without a worry in the world. How do you get to enjoy the holidays without emptying your pockets.

I'm glad you ask. I let other people invite me to parties and events, then usually if I don't have any celebrations to go to, I stay at home, doing myLot and going online on facebook, chatting with friends family, and relatives. Being a free loader at times is what I do :), but when I have the money I treat my friends as well.

Thanks for the reply, davaome! Gone were the days when I was the freeloader. Now that I have my family to worry about, my money is the one at stake. But, yeah, when I don't have money I busy myself with FB, mylot and, recently, 9gag.com. Hehehe!

It took forever and a lot of bargain hunting but I've found gifts for all my family and will be getting one holiday drink from Starbucks for myself and that's all the money I'll be using for the holidays. $7 for the cuff links for my brother, $8 for a wig that my cousin wanted, $3 for a lego set for another cousin, $15 for a coffee bean set for mom, a magazine set I redeemed with MyCoke points for my aunt and that's it. So that's under 50 bucks and I'm very happy with myself.

Great savings! Congratulations! I also collect points from different establishments because they can really help when I'm hard up. I actually get to enjoy a day without spending money by just using my rewards points. Merry Christmas!

I think some nominal expenditure is certainly needed to enjoy holidays, otherwise we may become a burden among others. Spending holidays alone would be boring.

money is used to be spent,we usually enjoy to spend it,we have to spend money ,beacuse happyness has its own cost,if we has reached our due idea by spending small sum of money,i think at that moment you won't bother about the loss of money.maybe you have no income, maybe your salary is very poor, maybe you have a big due expenditure, you have to save money ,you have to reduce your cost.no matter what method you will use,it is still unavoidable to spend moneny.the only difference if the sum of money you have spent. but you should know the most important thing is happiness rather than money.do you agree with me?at last ,merry christmas to you !

Yes, I agree with you, selinachang. I think spending money is unavoidable. What I need its to limit the spending and to save before hand. Thus, I've decided to join my husbunny's "paluwagan," some kind of savings group in their company so I'll have something to spend during the holidays. Plus, starting next year, I'll maximize my online opportunities to earn more. Merry Christmas!

I enjoy the holidays by letting my relatives spend their money not my money. Eat and drink for free. Go to church of course because it is the only place where i can talk to God and not spend big money.

Simple. If you don't have the money, you don't have it. I'm on a temporary assignment that may go into January but not much more. I have a day off this Friday. I have a few people I'm buying, and it's going to probably be $15.00 or 20 dollar gift certificates. So this Friday, I have a book that I already have, a laptop that I already have. And if you do have a job, remember to pay yourself first. That means if oyu have a saving account, take a certain amount and dump it in there. Even if it's 10 or 20 dollars a week, it adds up, in case something does happen.

Yeah, I'd probably have to do that starting next year, throwing in cash into my savings. Thanks, marty, for the advice.

Hi,my friend, i think it is really a hard thing to enjoy holidays without spending money. Anyway, we are not in primitive society now. What we eat, drink, play with, all cost us money. Unless, as you said, someone sponsor you these things. But if you change your expectation of those gifts, delicious expensive foods, stopping thinking about the beautiful clothes in the shopping malls, then there is way to spend less money on holiday. Having a gettogether with family members or friends, just use the materials to make some homemade foods, enjoy the quality time and share jokes and laughter. Well, being a kid is great, you don't need to worry about the money, but as we grow up, we should know how to live, no matter how much we can earn each month, we should try to save some money for the rainy days, if we don't afford too expensive holiday, but we still can enjoy with the small money we saved before.

Hello aprilsong! I used to join what they call "paluwagan" wherein we form groups save a part of our salary. The money saved was used to generate money like having someone loan a certain amount with interest. By December, we'll get the savings back with earnings from the interest from the loans. Anyway, this year, I didn't join a paluwagan because the one that I used to join closed down. I do need to start saving again.

Well, honestly it is a little difficult on my part. Even little, I still need to spend some money in order to enjoy fully the holiday. For example, instead of shopping to malls which will for sure cost me large amount of money, I can just visit my friends. However,my friends are living far from me so I need to spend some money. I also love to read. I can do it online but it makes my eyes very tired so I prefer to buy cheap books instead. I also love to chat with my friends online and learn some foreign languages. Well, being online for many hours will increase our electricity bills too

Ahahaha! That's so true! Our electricity bill can get quite high especially when I don't sleep early because I enjoy what I'm doing online. What languages are you interested in? Try Japanese! It's an interesting language.

Christmas season is a spending season like Chinese Spring Festival. As the Spring Festival is coming, people buy many things, such as gifts for relatives and friends, new clothes for children, food for festival-celebrating and so on.In addition, people are very busy preparing for the festival.

Hello Archaiwy! That event seems like fun. I hope I could experience Chinese Spring Festival too. And I hope I have money to spend when that happens.

I think the best way to do that is staying at home and watch TV. Everytime when i went out with my girlfriend for holiday, my pocket sure empty. I believe we can't avoid from spending money nowadays. Food, movie, travel and etc. Therefore, buy DVD and stay at home is a good option for me.

I miss my childhood too, people use to give me presents and money for New Year. But Christmas is a very expensive time. I just see all these families piling into the shopping malls and markets buying all their loved ones gifts and planning dinners for families, it's big money! Not to mention all the Christmas decorations! My family aren't really into the fancy Christmas decorations so that's a save for me. We don't hold family parties or dinners either, it's usually my aunty who has them and we just buy a few gifts to share. When I'm out with friends in a shopping mall, I will buy stuff because it's pretty boring just following your friends around and watching them try on a few nice clothes and buying them. It makes you want to buy something too. So one way I've been doing for a while to save a bit of money is to stay home and earn money right here! It's my school break and I can use all my time earning online. I have also been experimenting with new sites to earn too. gets me busy each day!

You're quite right when you said that it's boring to keep following your friends around without buying anything. When I'm with friends it's always soooo tempting to buy. Especially when they tell "that looks good on you." Hahaha! I'd better get myself busy too. Actually, I have a lot of work-related things to do. But my mind keeps telling me "Take a break!"

Emmmm, it is hard to say, but I often face this problems too, the lat thing I did on this situation is by staying at home with my family and having fun with them without any hope to get or to buy, let them serve everything. The less hope make me has more pleasure to enjoy anything.

Hahaha! I often advice myself to do that. There are times when I am successful. But sometimes, the urge to get out and feel the breeze of the airconditioning inside the mall is hard to resist.

very good question. enjoy holidays without money is little difficult task. but not impossible. i know some isolated families if you follow them your problem will be partially solved. their family member do not have much relation with others and they thing enjoyment is the wastage of money. GOOD LUCK n HAPPY CHRISTMAS

No matter how you look at it you have to spend alittle money. We go out and look at Christmas lights and this is inexpensive entertainment. We don't bake alot or make alot of fancy dishes for just the three of us. And we don't have to buy name brand clothes, or the most expensive things for eachother. I think we do well.

Christmas is about emptying your pockets. hat's the way economy works, it needs to get a breath once a year. Why do you think there's such a big fuss, generalised fuss about i all over the land? and even governments promote it? It's obviously because without such a massive movement of money world economy just would crash.

There are so many things we can do to spend holiday without emptying your pocket, such as gardening, play with your pets, or else. But, if you want to get a nice holiday, you better plan it before by save your money.

I would say being as close to family as you can. You don't have to go all out and buy fancy plates, dishware and food to feed an army. Christmas like thanksgiving is a way to express gratitude. It always helps to put some money aside every month till Christmas so you have some change to work with but that can be difficult with bills and everyday living expenses. You don't have to impress your friends or family, pretending to have lots of money that's not what the season is about.
