Two Nurses Tape Woman's Mouth Shut in Utah Hospital

United States
December 23, 2011 7:17pm CST
A woman named Penny Artalejo was admitted to the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Salt lake City because she was suffering with nausea and anxiety from taking medication for chronic neck pain. The two nurses who attended to her not only taped her mouth closed but they also joked about it saying that they hoped they didn't get caught because they would be fired. I can not believe that these two nurses would do such a thing. We trust these people to take care of us or our loved ones when we or they are sick & need help & this is what happens?! Why become nurses at all if you don't want to have to deal with patients? I don't understand how people like this can be so cruel. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this as well. I read this when i came home today, i couldnt believe it. I'm a nurse and i would never ever do that, how can you possible think about it? I can imagine how she's feeling right now, or her family. I'm happy that two monsters were fired.

I was never mistreated by any nurses the few times that I was in the hospital so I know that not all nurses are like this & thank goodness for that. Your right in calling them monsters. I don't understand how anyone could be that cruel. That poor woman was obviously scared by what was happening to her to begin with & instead of trying to make her feel more comfortable they only added to that fear. I am so glad that they were fired. I hope that they had their nursing license taken away as well.

I'm sure your right. Those nurses obviously did not love what they did for a living. Makes one wonder though why they wanted to become nurses in the first place.

yes i agree with you.. I am also a nurse and would not ever do anything like that to my patients. I love taking care of my patients and serving them right. unfortunately those two nurses are bad nurses, they don't love what they do that's why they treat their patients badly.

Nurses work incredible hours and see a lot of horrible things. I am sure these were very good and caring nurses. But, obviously, they have reached their breaking point and need a "time out".

I don't care how over worked they were. If they couldn't handle the hours that go along with being a nurse then they shouldn't have become nurses in the first place. As for needing a "time out" they need more then that. They needed to be fired which they were & rightly so. They should never be allowed near another patient ever again!!

Wow!! This is unreal, and these 2 nurses do need to be reported, and something done about this. This is uncalled for and far from acceptable. When you go into nursing you need to be more understanding, and try and help make a person feel more comfortable instead of doing something like this. I hope they are caught and Fired and actually loose their nursing license. I know I would not want these 2 women as my nurse.

It wasn't a nursing home. The patient was admitted to the hospital & as for the two nurses they were both fired & rightly so if you ask me.

I know right. I know I shouldn't be surprised by anything that happens in this world nowadays but I do. I think if I were to live to be a hundred I still wouldn't understand people or why they do the things they do.

Oh my, what had happened in the minds of these 2 nurses. Treating Penny like that as if she was a prisoner is inhuman. Firing them is not sufficient for what they have done to her. The authorities should have put them behind bars and revoke their licenses too.

That is a horrible thing to do by people who were entrusted to take care of the public health. Even if the reason is for safety, if it is without consent from the patient, it cannot be done. It is in humane. The fact that they know what they are doing was wrong was enough reason to dismiss them form their work. Incidents like this can affect public trust of people seeking out medical help . Laws should be specified in caring for patients and should be stricter when it comes to the patient's safety. It is betraying public trust to health professional. IT is just right that those two nurses will be dismissed and should undergo a disciplinary sanction like to serve in hospitals without pay and one wrong move will cause them to be in prison or revocation of their licenses to practice nursing.

I agree. We put our trust in these health care professionals to take care of us & see to our welfare while under their care. They not only betrayed this patients trust but they made all that much harder for other nurses to be trusted now. I am so glad that they got fired. I hope they never work with another patient ever again.

People do what they want to do and hope they get away with it. No one has to take responsibility for anything they do anymore. There is always a loop hole of allowance for them to swing on. And most of the time when they do get caught...the penalty is not so bad that they really "learn a lesson". If it is in the news, obviously the woman lived through it and was able to turn them in..but again..their word over hers. But still...people are like they used to be. They are lazy and uncaring and rude and vengeful. And not just nurses...good grief..I go to stores and if the people shopping aren't the rudest I have met in a long time! Why? I cna't figure it out. What's changed that they feel they have to be so rude? Society. Practically "anything goes" these days. Look at the language. Just a short 20 years ago the language that is now on regular television would never have been allowed on air back then. B.tch, GD, As_, Sh.t....you name it...it is said on television now and no one thinks anything of it. Fact of the matter is..the more that is said, the more laughs it gets! So I am not surprised at this article at all. Hope the woman gets bundles out of them nurses

The news reported that the woman told her daughter what happened later on & the daughter reported these two nurses to the hospital board. The nurses were of course fired as they should be. Your right when you say almost anything goes nowadays. I wish it were not like that, but unfortunately it is.

What a terrible story! Those nurses were so mean and uncaring! I am glad they were reported and fired! Those nurses should not been nurses in the first place! if a person wants to be a nurse they need to want to show compassion to paitents! Those 2 nurses didn't have any and I hope they will never be able to get a nursing job ever again! I hope Penny Artalejo or her daughter sue the hospital for what the nurses did! It was totally uncalled for!

I agree. Those nurses should never be allowed to work with patients ever again. I hope that they get their licenses taken away because that's what they deserve.

OMG! I can’t imagine that happening. Exactly! Why become a nurse if you can’t take the stress of complaining or noisy patients. These nurses need to be prosecuted and sued.. they need to spend some time in prison. They need to lose their licenses forever. I hope they never get to work in patient care again. What if this woman had been unable to breathe out of her nose? What if she had vomited in her mouth and aspirated? This is unconscionable.

Oh believe me I share your outrage & I agree with every word you said. I was feeling the same outrage as I watched this news report thinking, "My goodness how could they be so inhuman & cruel to that poor frightened woman." I hope they are never allowed to work w/ patients anywhere ever again!

This is sick! These 2 people are the worse! They should get the books thrown at them when the victim takes them to court! They had no compassion for this poor lady! She was sick and on top of being sick she what having an anxiety attack! I have anxiety attacks and I know what this poor lady was going through! What those 2 people did to her would only make her anxiety worse! It's a wonder she didn't die after what they did to her! Anxiety is nothing to joke about! It is very serious! People these days are so cruel and heartless! I can't stand those kind of people!

I agree. I've had panic attacks too so I know how scary they can be. This poor woman was so frightened by what was happening to her. As nurses they should have been comforting her & doing their best to keep her calm & reassured that she was going to be alright. The fact that they didn't do this & had in fact made her even more frightened by their actions makes me wonder why they ever wanted to become nurses in the first place.
