2012 is just around the corner and I am well aware that in many countries and cultures certain foods are eaten on the first day of the year to insure good luck, prosperity, blessings, etc. I am wondering what lucky foods are eaten on the first of the year in your family? How are they eaten and why are they eaten?

My husband's family eat black eyed peas and cornbread as a part of their New Years tradition. Eating these foods is supposed to gave you good luck and prosperity in the new year.

The cornbread especially sounds like a nice tasting tradition... Yum. Where did your husband's people come from or what ethnic background? I am always interested in the various traditions and where they came from.

So you just enjoy the new year... Yet... I am thinking that when the new year is celebrated in November Diwali 2012... there will at least be a few special sweets that are prepared to honor that time...Even though Kerala may not celebrate the holidays as much as the people in Northern India.
