How much for housing accomodations for 2 in Singapore?

I've heard a lot of opinions on this matter and still I'm not sure on how much money to prepare. One month advance and one month interest is surely a common rule. I will be moving and working in Singapore by January and I need to rent a room or unit good for 2 persons. We're just looking for a simple, safe accommodation with the basic necessities that's hopefully near our workplace in the the city. Nothing expensive for starters.
