Hi! I'm an Asian Chinese. I'm born with black hair and since Chinese New Year is approaching by end of January, I'm considering to dye my hair. Dark red would be nice to me. But I haven't dye my hair for once before. So maybe you can give me some advise on hair dye, types of dye available, what should be done before and after dying my hair, how to preserve the color etc? and should I straighten my hair before or after dying hair?

I think it's best not to dye your hair when it's naturally black. Someone told me that when you're still young and dye your hair often, gray hair comes out prematurely. So, I think you just concentrate on keeping your hair healthy. When your hair is healthy, it shines out and your hair becomes an envy to others. For me, that is the real beauty. Maybe you can either perm or straighten it once in a while but don't do it too often. I heard some hair rebonding liquid contain some chemical which is dangerous for users' health, so always check with your hairstylist and ask for advise.

I agree with you that it is better not to dye the hair if it is naturally black unless you have a whole bunch of gray hair. I started to have my hair dyed when I was young and now it is almost full of gray hair that I have to have it dyed each time I have a haircut.

Hi, squallming. I am a native of Chinese also. When I was in my late twenties, I had a little gray hair and then I had my hair dyed black. Ever since then, I have always had my hair dyed black each time I have a haircut. Now after decades, my gray hair is all over that I have to keep dyeing my hair. To dye your hair is no good unless you wish to have a change in color once in a while. You may try to straighten your hair if you wish to.

Many of my friends with dark hair, mostly black or brown, I say that if you are going to dye your hair to a lighter color, do it gradually because you and everyone will need time to get used to the new color or the change in your hair color. Red is actually a pretty good color for people with dark hair, but make sure that it is an Auburn or Dark red color because, again, you want a gradual change. If you make it a drastic change, you may not like it. I did a drastic change once, and I didn't like it and neither did anyone else I knew.

Hi there! I love dyeing my hair and I always go to the salon every 3 weeks before to change my hair color. I actually don't have any idea what color would suit you best. You can go to the salon and ask the experts if what is the color that will fit you. Sometimes, I just asked them to color my hair with the color that is appropriate. But my favorite is blonde. Add me in my Facebook and check out my hair colors. It's RJ Jimenez Sumaoy! Thanks!

yes you should have to straighten your hairs before dying, after dyinging its gives a symmetric affect, all over the hairs, in roots and in tips as well. and if you wants to get some more black hairs naturally, you should use some healthy ways to get them. eats green chillis, and sweet potatoes, these are some ancient arts for having good and black hairs.

First you have to decide if you want a permanent hair dye or a hair dye that lasts for about 6 or 8 weeks. Make sure sure that we pick the right kind of hair dye so that you don't buy a permanent hair dye if you only intended to buy a temporary hair dye. I don't know if you have long or short hair. If you have short hair one box of hair is enough, if you have long hair you might need two boxes. I have long hair and in the beginning I only used one box, and it is possible to do it that, but the result gets better when I use two boxes. Read the instructions carefully before you start, because there are some variations between the different kinds of hair dye and how to use them. Sometimes you have to rinse your hair before you start and sometimes have to use the hair dye on dry hair, it depends on the type of hair dye, so read the instructions.

The best advice I can give you is to not dye your hair at all. Especially if you don't have to. I started dyeing my hair when I was a teenager, got a perm, straightened out my hair when I didn't like the perm, frosted my hair, & then turned it blonde. My hair was so dry and brittle that it started to look horrible no matter what type of conditioner I bought. Finally I had enough. I bought a color that was as close to my original color as I could get, dyed it one last time & never dyed my hair ever again. Now years later my hair is healthy once again. Now whenever I get my hair cut they ask me what I put in my hair because they notice it's so healthy looking. I proudly tell them nothing at all. I just wash it. That's it.

My advice would be if your really wanting to dye your hair, I wouldnt do it too often. My mothers hair was dyed all her life and now her hair is very dry and feels like straw. I only dye my hair like once a year when I really want a change and my hair is still soft and nice. I wouldnt do it more than that. There are directions on the box itself as to what to do before and after, its not difficult though at all. =)

Hi squallming! I'd recommend that you first try out the hair you want using www.dailymakeover.com. If you have long hair, tie it in a ponytail then take a picture of yourself. Upload the picture in the site then try the hairstyle you want. Change also the haircolor and see if it suits you. Then, if you like what you see, printout your picture with the hairstyle and color you want. Go to a reputable hairstylist/colorist and have him/her make that hairstyle. I suggest you do one thing at a time. Too much chemical may cause permanent damage on your hair.
