As we know that chatting with office mates during lunch hour is always fun. We may eat anywhere, the topics being discussed were diverse, ranging from family problems, boyfriend, until business or office issues. However, not all things we can talk with our friends even though they are close office mates. Some of the topics are forbidden to be discussed during lunch and we should avoid when talking with our lunch our mates. Something like comparing salary, if somebody started to asking about our salary we must answering smartly..other sensitive topics like our affair if any, do not exposed during lunch..what do you think? What kind of best topics to be discussed during lunch with our office friends during lunch?

Discussions regarding salaries are actually frowned upon by the management of most companies. There are usually policies covering that certain topic which may result in disciplinary action. Salary discussions usually result in low employee morale. Now for the personal issues, like relationship problems, it is within your own right as a human being to discuss it with anyone during your lunch break. Imposing a prohibition against this topic is not justified not unless you gossip about your co-employees affairs. People love to share their problems and frustrations with others because it eases their depression and this should not be frowned upon by upper management not unless it severely affects job performance.

Well, you have good points my friend …sometimes really hard to handled and hold ourselves to not talk about our boss..but salary could be really obvious to talk about.. even talk about level in management will be prohibited on certain company…You are right, sometimes if we are having lunch with someone we trust maybe easier to talk about those kind of things.. Only close friend able to give us suggestion and recommendation on many things going forward..Especially someone that more senior than us.. However, we must limit ourselves not always to talk about it anytime.. Appreciate your response and happy new year..

This depends on where you work at. If working for healthcare then talking about patient privacy is a NO-NO. Talking about personal affairs I think it's personnal and only close mates will know. I see collegues as teammates rather than close friends but some collegues can be close friends as well it depends. The reason I said that is if sometimes problems can occur in a work environment such as not getting along with your collegues due to attitude issues and if that happens they might go around and tell your secretes selfishly. The best topic will be general stuffs like shopping flee, advises on buying a house, car since some of them might have done it before and they can give you an idea. Or how many siblings you have, where you grew up...just to get to know you a bit better. You might have a collogue that came from the same town as you....you just never know.

Well, you are right. Discussing about someone salary is always banned and really inappropriate to discuss on every company..You are right, some kind of unwritten law has exist in our social life with our office mates. However, I have found one guy who always want to know about somebody else salary and start to do comparison with others..Maybe something wrong about him or he just a typical of selfish guy who want to be number one and always complaining about many things…appreciate for your response any way..

Hi there... Discussing salary is totally banned in our company.. Comparing salaries is the worst thing to do with the colleagues... Everyone isn't equally qualified and doesn't have equal talents... So it is not good to compare what everyone gets... That is bad manners... Yes, there are a few things which shouldn't be discussed everywhere... There are unwritten laws about what we should talk and what we should not... :) Take care

Well, you have good points..sometimes it depends on the place where we work at.. Something like talking about patient privacy is really prohibited and against ethical law in hospital..You are right sometimes we can talk about personal matters with someone really close and we really trust..Something like you mentioned is also about office politics will be favorite topics to discuss with our close office friends..General stuffs is always great to be discussed..Like the sale price on certain shopping centres..about our children development or many general things like that…appreciate your response and happy new year..

I agree that not everything can be discussed with our office mate during lunch time. The same thing applies to other occasions with other people that you know. I believe the best topic to be talked about during lunch time would be something general such as your favorite past time, latest news or maybe some sales going on in supermarket etc. Definitely shouldn't touch something personal. They are bad ideas.
