Disabling automatic updates of softwares

I am facing the automatic updates of certain software whenever I connect to Internet, due to this automatic updates my internet connection get slow down. Is there any remedy to solve this problem. While installing ceratin software it asks for automatic updates there we can choose as NO, but few softwares not asking while getting installed, so it starts automatic updates. Whats another problem is that, I am using prepaid connection and its having limited amount of usage which are getting wasted by this automatic updates. And also give me some tips and tricks to speed up my internet connection.
