Is Barack Obama turning into our own Magaret Thatcher by using a war to gain popularity? In 1982 Thatcher was doomed to lose the upcoming vote in the UK and siezed the chance to go to war with Argentina over the Falkland islands, a then worthless rock in the antlantic ocean. After doing her best Churchillian speeches she romped home to victory in the elections strongly due to the fickle support of the idylistic press. Do you think Obama could be thinking the same strategy or is this a naive belief? Do you think intervention in Iran would be a good thing or not?

Iran is the one place in the middle east that the U.S. should be at war with simply because they're are working toward acquiring nuclear weapons and they clearly have every intent on using them, if not against the U.S. then certainly against Israel. At the very least, they're the country most likely to put nukes in the hands of terrorists. The thing that keeps the U.S. from going to war with Iran is the support that Iran has from Russia and China. If the U.S. were to go to war with Iran then Russia and China would intervene in a way that they didn't during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars which could very well lead to WWIII. That's why for decades, the U.S. has been trying to avoid using military force against Iran because they don't want to provoke Russia or China. So to answer the question, I don't believe that we will see Obama, or even a republican president, should the GOP win the election, go to war with Iran. I think what we'll see is a continued effort to have as many countries as we can, put pressure on Iran and if that doesn't work, we could see the U.S. covertly aid Israel and allow Israel to launch strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities as they've done in the past. That is the most likely scenario.

I don't think a war would be very popular in USA : removing US troops from Iraq was certainly better to gain popularity -- at 3 months of a presidential election in France, some are also thinking of removing our troops from Afghanistan --. Falklands were another problem, as Falklands were invaded by Argentina. I believe we will also go to war for a French island, even an inhabited one, like Clipperton -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipperton_Island -- if it was "invaded".

we always have to stand firm but i would hope strong threats could prevent all out war.
