Soggy Bottom?

When I was growing up it was hard to get an entire bowl of cold cereal down me. I would start off eating it just fine but as time went by and the cereal got soggy from sitting in the milk for so long, I lost interest. I'm sorry, I just cannot abide a soggy corn flake! I remember when Cap'n Crunch first came out, it promised to stay crunchy no matter how long it sat in the milk...and lo and behold it kept its promise! Of course, nutritionally it was garbage but at least we kept the crunch. It never occurred to me that anyone ever felt different about soggy cereal. That is, until I met my friend Cindy. Cindy actually makes her cereal soggy on purpose and to her that is the entire purpose of the milk! Imagine that! Well, it was a revelation to me. Recently I saw a video of the Doctors' show where they were recommending that we not throw out the leftover milk after eating our cereal. Apparently much of the nutrition in the cereal actually leaches out into the milk. Of course, I tend to drink the milk out of the bowl after I've eaten the cereal, anyway, but this just confirmed that I was doing the right thing there. So...how do you eat your cold cereal? Do you drink your milk out of the bowl? Do you like it crunchy or soggy? And what about sugar content? Do you go in for the more nutritious fiber rich cereals or the sugary sweet junk cereals? And why?

As rice is our staple food here in the Philippines, issues on cereals don't really affect me that much. I have tried cereals though and I would admit that I would love one which retains the crunch. And like you I like finishing off the milk. Bran cereals, like the one I tried, didn't suit my taste as it was tasteless, smelled like hay, and was dry as a coconut husk. So sad that they're junk but I kind of like froot loops and coco crunch.

lol....I like the high fiber cereals that include nuts and fruit in them...like Fruit N Fiber or Great Grains cereals. They are too expensive, though, so I usually eat Cheerios or Raisin Bran...sans sugar added. When I was a kid I always had sugar on my cereals (unless it was the sweetened kind like Froot Loops or Cocoa Puffs) but as an adult I have cut out extra sugars in my diet and taught myself to eat my unsweetened cereals without the sugar added. It's funny how everyone's taste is so different, isn't it?

Good thing there isn't just one brand in the market. Imagine Quaker oats alone in the shelf! We'd probably have to live with soggy our entire lives.

I never had a problem downing a full bowl of cereal as a kid, even with ice cold milk. As far as whether I'll eat it soggy or not.. for me, it depends entirely on the type of cereal. With Lucky Charms for instance, I can't stand it when they get soggy, but I'll still make an effort to drink the milk. The cereal pieces themselves aren't that bad, but the milk-drenched marshmallows are just too gooey, I don't like them. On the other hand though, I love when Cocoa Puffs go soggy - I go coocoo for them!! Haha ok that was a little over the top, but still. I find that Corn Flakes are also delicious once they are soggy - not sure why. Another example would be Shredded-Wheat. I think without letting the pieces soak for a little bit, they are simply too dry to enjoy, but then again, if I think of cereals like Golden Grahms, I try to pour as little milk as possible because I don't want them going soggy. I've also heard that all the milk is where most of the nutrients lie, so I definitely drink the milk no matter the cereal. As far as sugar content, I definitely go for the sugary sweet junk cereals, just because I grew up on them. Also, if I'm craving something really wholesome or feel that I need to eat healthy/fibrous that morning, I will usually eat whole-wheat toast rather than a whole grain cereal.

i dont mind soggy cereal however it depends on what type of cereal it is. if it is the flake kind (which i am not all that fond of) i may not eat it but if it us any other sort of cereal, i will eat it and drink the milk afterwards. i like the fibre types of cereal.

I have never liked the sliminess of soggy cereal. I always eat my cereal (usually raisin bran or cheerios) quickly to avoid it getting soggy. lol...I might be known as Speedy Gonzales of the breakfast table.
