In almost every country, you can find someone who speaks any other country's language. You can just go online and find something. But don't just fly to Paris, say "I need someone who speaks English," and expect a bunch of people to offer their help for free. (We can't all be as lucky as the woman in The Grudge 2, where a nice local just happens to be around.) And we should be appreciative of the people who do learn to speak English. In some ways, it's one of the most difficult languages to learn. We have so many words that sound just like others (reed, read), look the same when we read (read, read), and our sentance structur is often different. It seems easy to us, and it's everyone else who is weird, because we grew up with it.

You are really lucky then. Or maybe I'm just that unlucky, so I'm not even going to try it. That, and I'd feel incredibly stupid if I went Japan when all I know are introductions. Guess it's just me.

ello zahiedp... well English is the first International language since years ago, and the next is Mandarin. but I can't speak Mandarin. Nowadays almost all people can comunicate in English, it is a need. Even little kids learn English since they are in play group. It is not a trend anymore, it is a need. So no wonder if many people use English daily.

Is it really that global? I never knew that. I always thought Chinese was the biggest language cause it's the biggest country, lol. I find English easy to learn, though. The structure isn't too complicated IMO. I guess it is confusing for foreigners cause we have a different order in which we put the verb/noun or something.

People around the world try to speak English because it seems easy to learn. It's wonderful to have a common language but the poor English! As long as they understand and make others understand them, people don't care to learn the language in detail. And many of them even don't realise that they literally torture the language. One good example is the so called Brussels English. But I admire many myLotters here who are not native speakers but use many idioms and have a perfect wording.

Yes, indeed. English is the universal language. It is use from all over the world. It's easy to use and to learn. It's my second language actually, i don't know how to speak other languages. But i'm also interested in learning other languages. I think that for people who can speak more than 3 or 5 different languages are cool. LOL.
