on top of me working in private home health, i used to work for a tax office, in which everyone in my house is fully aware of. my sister and my ex, both decided to use another online tax service. my sister was complaining that they weren't getting enough back and asked if i would take a look. so i did. i found out what she was doing wrong. so i used my online tax service and showed her the difference between the two websites. she ended up using my tax service to gain the extra refund. when i told her my fee was 10% of the difference, she laughed! i did the work on my tax service, she got to file for free, i think it was only fair for to pay for my services! considering that she asked me right as i walked into the door from working 10 hours already and before i could even get my dinner!! this was supposed to be my quiet time to unwind and relax. my ex, on the other hand, i asked him what his refund was. my sister did it for him. i showed him what i did for my sister. he asked if i would take a second look. i was able to increase his refund. i told him my fee. he agreed. he's still trying to show me appreciation this morning. i'm just glad that understood why i charged a fee and not laughed at me. what he doesn't know, i'll take his money and go buy our daughter's class ring.

I think when it comes to sibilings, they / we think that anything done for the other should be free of charge. In ways it should be, but I think it's only fair that you charge a little bit for helping because it did take time out of your day and relaxing. If not a fee, she should be courteous enough to give you a gift of some sort.

it really annoyed me that she just laughed at me. i found her mistakes and made her more money. what really gets me, i finally got ours done, it was a very bad year for me. if she would give me a little something, it woulld help greatly.

Working for family is always difficult, they were wrong in my mind to expect you to work for free, almost all family members think that in-laws should work for free. They did the right thing in choosing another on-line service but should have stuck with it and complained to that service and not ask you if they weren't prepared to pay 10% of the difference.

here's a kicker....her husband didn't like the fact that she did all this and wants to take their info to another tax preparer. ok fine. she ended up using another online tax and did something else and filed that. so i did all that work for nothing!! at least my ex is happy with what he's getting and doesn't mind paying me for my time.

Just hope you only get caught the once. Then they can please their-selves who does their tax, unfortunately besides what they pay on-line they will also lose out in paying extra tax.
