Please, give me your best advice on this. The thing is that my son applied to go as an exchange student to Finland for one year sponsored by rotary International. He was accepted, however, they changed his original destination to India! due to slots unavailability to Finland. It is opposite to what he had asked, so he is not really excited about it anymore. Though, no one of us actually know that country, and obviously have nevr travelled there, so perhaps our conception about it is biased. we have decided to support him on what ever his decision is. We want him to go abroad soon whatsoever, but if we send him to India, we will not be able to cover the costs of sending him to the University in finland, until the middle of the carrer. In the other hand, if we do not send him to India, he could go to finland from the beginning, but he would have to wait until then. Do you think it is worth it to sacrifice half of his university in favour of one year in finland? Otherwise, should he stay here? by the way, we are from mexico. and my son says he loves Finland because of its high high quality education, cold weather, environmentalism, greenery, lakes, cold, snow, organisation, welfare system, cleanliness, prosperity, cold, blondes, slimy people, places, history and off course COLD weather. So we are really bewildered about the decision we should take:s

When I was eighteen years old I worked in Finland as a children's nanny. I loved the interesting towns, the green forests, the blue lakes and the enjoyable time in the sauna. The family had a log cabin by a lake and it had a sauna. Educational standards in Finland are very high. It has a cool climate with very much light in the summer. It has longer hours of darkness that England does in the winter. It is a clean and tidy. I would prefer to have a year studying there than a year studying in India. I would love to visit India for a month or so though. I hope your son gets to study in Finland. Good luck.

Hello there.. I can understand your confusion as parent. I am an Indian and I would say your son would hate to be here, but at the end of his session he will have learned a lot of things about country... Life here is a little hard! It is diverse, plentiful, colorful... There are Riches of the billionaires on one side of the road and on the other there are slums of those poors who built those palaces... There is too much to eat for a few, but most of them go hungry one time... Corruption has more existence than the air... Life is diverse and hence there is a lot to learn here... He might not love it, but he will definitely be a learned one when he comes back to you... Take care...

Well getting an education is very important. But if it is not cost effective then I would stay where I am and go to school. I would not go to India either. Let him make his decision first. Don't pressure him. If he decides to stay where he is, then accept it. If he is willing to go to FInland for the year, then embrace that. And from what I read here, it seems like he does not want to go to India. But I would sacrifice the year to go where I really wanted to go.
