Thats a very good question, I suffer so much when peeling onions although my mother could peel so many onions and they never made her cry at all, I used to make relish years ago and I used to get my mother to peel all the onions...

Try to use salt. It's very effective. You'll no longer cry. I promise! Just put small amount of salt on the chopping board. Let it stay on the chopping board while you're peeling and chopping. Don't mix the salt with the onions. Just leave it in one corner. Enjoy!

You're welcome! Don't forget to try. It's really effective. I am not sure if iodized salt has the same effect because we use coarse salt.

How about those who seem not affected by this? Yes. There are people who never cry whenever they chop onions. I also cry. That is why I always use salt. Try it. You'll no longer cry.

That sounds like a great idea for me try.Sometimes I need to chop onions. I used to set up a salad bar in a grocery store, that required me to chop up them red onions. I hated chopping them, my eyes burned so bad. I don't work at the store anymore. I wish I would have known about salt back then.

Yes. Try it, and you'll be amazed. We use coarse salt. I don't know if iodized salt has the same effect. At first, I thought it's one of the superstitious beliefs of the oldies. But when I tried using salt, I was really amazed I no longer cry.

They absorb sulfur from the ground and your tear glands start producing as a reflex to the liberation of these sulfur particles when you cut the onion. What also has this is garlic chives leeks and about 300 other specimens relative to these.

Wow! That's nice to know, universe2o6. How about if you're chopping onions on the 17th floor take for example? I mean, can it also absorb sulfur? Sorry for my dumb question for I am really this ignorant.

I think it is common, because red onions contain sulfur, which makes us distracted eyes and nose, but I heard crying is good for health while not excessive, since remove toxins in the body through the tears. happy mylotting and be healthy!!

My grandparents believe that when you cry whenever you peel and chop onions, you'll also cry when you're already married. They say you'll not have a good relationship with your in laws. That's the sign. If onions can't make you cry, your in laws for sure really like you, and you're the one who will make them cry. That's of course superstitious belief, but they always say it's true. Well ... find it for yourself. Aside from this, another superstitious belief with regard to onion is the use of coarse salt. They say if you put salt on the chopping board, you'll not cry while you chop onions. But we found out that it's not superstitious belief, it's true! Do you also cry when you peel and chop onions? I tell you, this is very effective. Put at least one tablespoon of salt on the corner of the chopping board. It shouldn't be mixed with the onion. Just let the salt stay there. We haven't tried yet if iodized salt is also effective. I also read in one site that if you peel and chop onions in front of electric fan, you'll not also cry, instead the electric fan is the one that is going to cry. So, which is your choice? Salt or electric fan?
