Last night while sleeping in her crate my dog chewed her nails and half and there was some blood. My dog loves her crate and its her favorite place to be. I am concerned because she made some blood. How do I make her stop this? I cut her nails to so that is not the problem here. My dog is a nervous type of dog and I thought that may be it. I am scard to leave her home alone or unsupervise her because she may do it again and bleed to death. Help!

Dear Java! What the age of your dog? Which is the breed? How long this dog is with you? Having known about this I can give some advice as a Vet! In Fact I am an Equine Vet working for a Stud farm in India! Before that I had my own private practice for the canines! I think there is some irritation in the paws of your dog! Please check the inter digital place and make sure that there is nothing there and if every thing is fine wipe it dry and apply some talcum powder there! Please check the nails if they are having any fungal growth around them or having any infection! In some cases of mange also dogs may experience itch ! I would advice you to take your dog to a vet and and have a thorough check up! Don't worry just by biting the nails and bleeding no dog will die but it is definitely important to go to the root cause of the irritation! All the best! Thanks!

Shes a year old and she's a Boston/ Rat terrier mix. She causes an irritation from her chewing the nails,I'll have to take her to the vet to find out more. It's a strange habit to me.It doesn't appear to be mange, because it looks fine when she leaves her paws alone.I'm just worried about if she chews her quick in her nail, thats the main blood vessel.

Looking at the age and other factorsI think you must take him to a Vet and get him examined thoroughly! Please don't take fungal infection lightly! They can be nasty some times! All the best ! Thanks !

Also, there is a type of fungus like stuff on her toe area. Its a blackish color, I don't know if its there now, but in the past I have noticed she had a problem with that. I didn't think it was to serious because there was very little and it went away. But when she chews her nails, it seems to come back.

Well this sounds familiar to me. My dog bit and chewed his tail till he bled. He was in pain but he did not stop there. I did my best to cure his wound but he would not stop. He kept biting his tail day by day until he finished the whole and had nothing more to bite. I was afraid he would bite another part of his body again so I gave this dog up. I can't last seeing a dog bleeding all day.

My Dads Dog does this, She is constantly chewing at her paws and makes them bleed, which is a nightmare because she is a white dog so her paws are always stained off the blood. She was took to the vets and it turns out she has a type of allergy and it is irritating her a little. Maybe this is the problem with your Dog. Hope this helps a little.

I think I'll be taking her to the vet,it may be an allergy or something making her paws itch. It's definately not normal she does this.

you shoul go and see a vet because this is actually a abnormal behavior cause by stress.usualy dogs manifest this twitch by chewing the nails, paws ,tail or the furniture.it can be caused by a deficiency of minerals or vitamins ,or by a neurologic problem,or just because of some stress that camed in your dog's life.it's not a solution to keep his mouth tied cause you can do this forever.the vet can give you some medication if he figures out the cause.

Dogs can have allergies that cause itchy feet which can lead to excessive chewing. They can have nail infections which can cause them to chew. It is always recommended to give your dogthe benefit of the doubt and rule out any possible medical conditions before resorting to behavior therapy. A general check up and complete blood panel test is needed to know the underlying cause.

your best bet when you leave home to go take care of something is put a mouth restrainer or whatever those are around her mouth till you get back? thats all i can think of until you find a better answer but this is a possible answer for now
