We are doing a theatre play on the Cold War about two brothers who are being split up by the Berlin wall. One is becoming an agent in the KGB and one is becoming a CIA agent. I can't seem to find a connection that makes the one brother go to the West. So what was life there? What could be his motivation?

Political beliefs probably. Family members don't necessarily have the same beliefs on a lot of things. They could even have different religious beliefs. My brother and I had since differed in our political ideologies, him preferring more to the left of the political spectrum, I on the other hand firmly believe in the right side of it. But we don't fight and I still respect him as my older brother. Going back to your play, you must also consider that that was a post World War II time. Europe was really damaged and life was not that easy yet. The West provided a more comfortable lifestyle too during that time.
