If you're using Windows 7 (and perhaps Windows Vista too) it's actually relatively easy to secure your system. First, download each and every single update for Windows 7. After that you'll notice you've got Microsoft Security Essentials installed, and it has replaced Windows Defender. MSE is all you'll really need for an anti-virus! It's very lightweight, it integrates well with Windows so it's not gonna break anything, and it's surprisingly effective in detecting malware. Make sure that real time protection is turned on and select the advanced membership in the Microsoft SpyNet settings and you're good to go! Second, ensure that automatic updates is turned on. Updates are very important to the security of Windows. Third, change the User Account Control settings to always notify. It's more annoying, but UAC actually does a good job of insuring applications don't do malicious stuff, though it'll be up to you to be careful in approving UAC prompts. As long as you don't frequently change settings and install applications it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Fourth, make sure Windows Firewall is enabled. It's a good way to keep intruders out. Fifth, disable Autoplay. Even though Autoplay is much more improved in Windows Vista and 7 and isn't the virus magnet that it once was, it's still relatively dangerous, especially if you often insert USB flash drives in your system. Sixth, and lastly, turn on Data Execution Prevention for all programs and services. It's a very good security measure, but it might cause compatibility problems for some applications (especially games). In that case, just add an exception for the applications that are incompatible with DEP and you're good to go. There you go! Windows Vista and 7 is actually quite secure by default, in fact prior to Mac OS X Lion, Windows was actually more secure than Macs (technologically, that is). Just exercise some common sense when browsing out there and don't go installing applications all willy nilly and you should be relatively safe.

On my laptop I use microsoft security essentials, windows 7 default firewall, browse the net using sandboxie and sometimes fire up returnil. I used to used avira antivirus and comodo firewall and hips. I was having some issues with the computer and decided to chance it with the microsoft security products. Computer runs better but Im not sure Im protected as well as I used to be. Security also has a lot to do with user habits. I avoid surfing questionable sites and do not share flashdrives unless im returniled. Of course nothing is bullet proof but so far so good.

Avast! antivirus free edition to have a real time protection (gamer mode on to avoid messages from it). Malwarebytes and superantispyware which I both run once a month in safe mode to scan and delete virus which eventually bypassed avast. Ccleaner is to keep your computer "clean" from temporany files, cookies, manage boot, etc.
