It is strange why cats and dogs don't like each other. It is common that they will have a fight when they see each other. It will be a news if they can be friends. I don't know the reason. Do you?

I think it also has to do with the owner. See dogs want to be the alpha, and if the owner doesn't let the dog that he or she is not the alpha, the dog may try to control the cat. I don't have a cat now, but we did have a White Shepherd and my daughter's cat living here when she was still at home. The first thing we did was establish with the dog is that she was not to chase and bother the cat. Unfortunately my daughter's cat was a stray who must have been through something, so she doesn't even trust people, let alone another animal, but the dog learned quickly that she was respect the cat and not frighten her.

Instinctual. Sort of like a gang situation. If a dog and cat live in the same household and aren't scitzoid they will get along. At one time cats, dogs and rats were friends. Has to do with the science of predator and prey. As man kills out other predators then these three will become even more bitter enemies because of the instinct to kill for food. Some say it is hereditary hatred too.

The instinct is a good reason.

Personally I feel a lot of times it is because of size. But I have known and see many times where a Dog and Cat do get along and can even live together. I know I see nothing wrong with both living in one household as long as they get along, and do not become too protective of their family. Personally they are both Fun loving pets so maybe more people just need to try and grow them up more together as well.

Hi Krause, i managed to teach both my ex-cat and ex-dog to live together until they are gone to another world. At first it is quite a difficult tasks, but after a few times trying, i managed to achieved it. And really happy to see them getting along together until both are in their old age.

Hi Youless, i just know that before my ex-cat and dog, haven't get to know each others well, they always like to quarrel a lot whenever they met. After they used to live together under one roof, they became good friends. I ever seen them helping each other when there is stranger cat or dog roaming in our garden. I really loves them a lot but both of them unable to sustain until the ripe old age. Both of them had gone for nearly 10 years now. If only i know how to take nice photos of them, i would have shared their beautiful photos here.

There are alot of dogs that like cats.Usually if you own a cat and you get a dog, the dog will bond with it,especially if the dog grows up with the cat.I used to always own a cat and a dog, and they liked each other.

I have seen cats and dogs being friends, it is in their nature not to be I guess but many have become friends infact some really love each other when in a family situation.

Perhaps because of their DNA?

It is definitely because those two species are biological enemies. How could a mongoose establish relationship with a venomous snake. NATURE.. it is is all recorded there... Friends ..Foes...

The dog likes to worry small animals, including cats. This is dog's natural instinct,so we shouldn't be surprised why people liken poking one's nose into other people's business to a dog trying to catch mice. The cat runs away at the sight of dog,say nothing of becoming friend with dog.

When I lived out in the country i had 3 dogs and 4 cats and never had any issues with them not being friendly. If the animals spend a lot of time together they will get use to each other. Even if they start out fighting. I have even had times where they will cuddle up and nap with each other. I have also had them fight for each other. When a stray dog or cat wandered into the yard they would work together to drive the stray away from the yard.

If from the view of science, cat and dog are came with different family, will it because they are in different genesis and make them cant be friend? I am also curious about this, haha!

I agree that most cats and dogs can't be friends but it is probably because they are "strangers" to each other as I have seen cat and dog living in the same house and getting along very well since they know each other and spend time together in same house...

I believe they can be good friends. First they might see their each other stranger so they start fighting.
