I have an HP pavilion dv6 laptop and when it powers on I get a hard disk 1 error. I tried to take it out and put it back in and nothing. I know I can buy a new harddrive but how do i get it to work again after that? Also I hate windows vista on my laptop is there anyway for a novice like me to clone my hp windows xp desktop drive to work in my laptop after I buy a new harddrive? Thanks!

As said before, you can reformat the hard drive! And if you have a back up of your files from the laptop before, then when using a new hard drive, after having Windows XP, OR Windows 7 on it, you can have your files on your new desktop! Vista sucks, big time, the worse windows ever made, gave the biggest headaches for a lot of Windows fans. Windows XP is great for its functionality and professionalism. Pretty Reliable. Windows 7 is good all around since it has the functionality and professionalism of xp, with the appearance of Vista!

reformatting your disk is the bert thing to do. You can still install win xp to your new hard drive but be sure to use this as a default if you are using 2 hard drives. Note, installing a new operating system needs reformatting of the disks else you want to use dual boot.
