I would recommend going through a adoption service. If you have a PetCo or PetSmart in your area go there on a weekend, you should be able to find a good service. They will pay for shots and to have them spayed/neutered as needed and they do extensive interviews before letting anyone adopt their pets. With the one we used (we had a similar situation except we actually intended to keep Mama) we fostered the kittens and took them to the pet store each Friday. Then they'd call us on Sunday to tell us if we needed to come back and get them. We ended up keeping one of the five, my mom's brother took two and the other two got adopted really quick...within just a couple of weeks.
