My son was initially diagnosed when he was 2 years old to be at risk for ADHD but after a year thhe developmental pediatrician chnaged it to Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although she said she cannot directly pinpoint that my son is autistic but she said he is showing signs. I fear that son my son is really autistic because of how some people react to the condition especially those who are not fully aware or understand it.

What signs is your son showing? My 14 (soon to be 15) year old son is autistic. My husband and I knew, or rather suspected, that he was autistic by the time he was 4 years old. However, no one would listen to us. Not even his pediatrician that he had at the time. We had wanted to get him evaluated but needed to get a referral from her in order to proceed. However, she wouldn't give it to us as she didn't think he had autism. So we waited... We got the referral we needed from a different pediatrician....2 and a half years later. And it turned our son does have autism, just like we thought. We just didn't know how severe it was. Anyway, you'll be surprised to know most people are lot more aware and understanding about autism than you realize. Sure, you might encounter a total @ss from time to time, but don't let that rule your life. Chances are they'd be jerks regardless of the situation anyway. PS If your son's doctor thinks that your son is autistic don't wait to get him diagnosed. The sooner it's done, the better. I only wish I could have had my son evaluated sooner...

The doctor's main concerns are that he has fleeting eye contact and can speak very few words for his age

Hmm, I don't know if that's enough to say that your son is autistic. My son had a lot more signs than that at that age and still everyone thought he would just grow out of it. However, to be on the safe side, I think it's still a good idea to get him tested...just in case. With so many different spectrums of autism out there, it's the only way to know for certain if he is autistic or not. Good luck!

I'd have the child looked at by a geneticist. My friend's son was first diagnosed with adhd, but I noticed some signs of Asperger's, which I have too. She got more testing done and a genetics test proved he had Fragile X instead. It is commonly misdiagnosed as autism, adhd, and Asperger's because a genetics test isn't done.
