embarrassments

I just committed a faux pas this afternoon. I was invited to judge in a children’s piano recital (though this surprised me having to judge for a recital—just could not refuse an insistent friend) and was not informed what to wear. I went in denims though my blouse seemed to make up for the denims. I was even more embarrassed when the master of ceremony mentioned the dress code. But when I saw the headteacher’s attire (and she handed the certificates on stage), I think I dressed ok more than she did. Still, it didn’t help. I felt uncomfortable all throughout. I was hoping I would not be asked to go up the stage but I had to announce the ranks. So, I went up and suffered inside. Did you have such experiences? What did you do and how did you cope?

I have learned never to take myself to seriously. I would have made a joke, like; " This was such an honor to be asked to judge this event that I forgot to ask how to dress, so now you see me at my comfortable best. And the first winner is" That way you have defused any comments made at a later date. Believe me the children won't care all they will remember is if they won.

My cousin invited us to his son's first birthday party so my siblings, a friend of ours, and I went to the reception area of the known restaurant in our place as it was the chosen venue for the event. We arrived a little late, but what was more embarrassing was the fact that we were all dressed in casual attire while all the guests and hosts were in formal attire. Since we were late, they were already all seated as we were walking in and I could feel their eyes chewing us up. We weren't informed that there was a dress code. The good thing is I wasn't alone, as we were a group.

Fortunately, I haven't been in such a situation. I guess I worry about getting embarrassed that I make sure that I know the dress code for the particular event I'm attending. I even bring a separate set of clothing in case I'm not sure exactly what to wear. I mean, sometimes the dress codes are a bit vague. Like something casual or not too formal. I mean, these don't help me decide
