What to keep cool in the summer heat?

Summer is here in the Philippines. It's hard to combat the summer heat without resorting to air conditioning. Like every year, our electric bills would skyrocket during this season. Do you have any tips in saving energy? What are the other (cheap) ways to keep cool in the summer?

Chiyosan, we already have ice cream and halo halo in our fridge! LOL. We are preparing for this hot season, but yeah, its kind of weird because some days are rainy and others are sweltering. We should never ever leave our umbrella at home.

Hi to you cheerfulnuts. It was only today that I felt the extreme heat. A few days ago the temperature in our place was still cool like the early days of December. There were slight drizzles and the wind was somehow strong. Today it was really hot and I had to go out on an errand. Keeping cool inside the house is done by opening all the windows and letting the fresh air in. We are near Tagaytay so we still experience the cool air from time to time. I drink lots of ice cold water and sometimes soft drinks. A cold shower is sometimes fine in the early afternoon. What I am worried about is the computer so the electric fan is used to cool it down during midday. However, I love the heat of summer. I prefer it than the cold and rainy months. I tend to be more active wearing tubes and shorts rather than when I am bundled in sweaters and jackets.

Hi yahnee, your area sounds great. We're opposites. I prefer cold rainy days. I feel so lazy in the summer because I don't want to get too sweaty. I guess I had associated the summer season with laziness, because summer = vacation and vacation = being lazy LOL.

Hi cheer, I have this extra large trees around my house, I don't really mind the fallen leaves, it makes good fertilizer to the soil around, and the gloomy air it gives to the surroundings especially at night where only the fireflies give light among the branches. And one good thing I really like in those trees is the cool shade they give during the summer season, come sun or high temperature.

Rog0322, I wish I have a huge tree at home. I live in the heart of Manila. The closest thing we had at home is a pot of soil. Our plant had withered a few years ago.

Thanks to the trees around our neighborhood, because our place as you approach it would be a little cooler compared to the main road. These trees, really cools our place, so much so that we never have to use air conditioner at home for us to be able to sleep fitfully at night. We would just leave a screened window open at night and a rotating electric fan. Other than that, we always wear just sleeveless tops and shorts when at home. I drink very cold water every now and then. Thus, i am not very much affected by the heat.

I'm so jealous of you. LOL. I live in the city, so we don't have much trees here.:(

I live in California, and it gets pretty hot in Templeton and Paso Robles in the summertime. My second story office window air conditioner did little good when the temperature got above 85 up here. Last year we got a ceiling fan, and it helped a bit, but now I have a swamp cooler that works very well unless we get into the 90's (F). It uses less power and actually does a better job than the air conditioning did, but it wouldn't work well in humid conditions.

Sometimes, it's tempting to crawl inside the fridge LOL. We have electric fans at home, but they seem to just circulate the hot air in the room. It's hot and humid in the Philippines, so buying a swamp cooler is not an option.:(
