I'm going to Hongkong together with my grandmother a couple of weeks from now. I am a bit worried of the possible things that would ruin our vacation. One of the things that really bother me is the communication barrier that may hinder us from having meaningful conversations with the people residing in the city. However, i am a lot more excited of the beautiful scenery we may be able to witness during our stay. Knowing that this trip is our first international trip, i really am looking forward to witness new culture and tradition. Hence, I am also excited to meet new people from different races. :) Nevertheless, i intended to make this discussion to ask you guys of tips that you may share with me. Like, what things should we really not forget to bring etc. , Places that i shouldn't leave hongkong without visiting and the like. Thank You in advance. :)

Yeah, before we decided to go to hongkong we also thought of going to singapore. However, my grandmother opted to go to hongkong because she wants to go shopping due to the rumors that there are a lot of cheap good items that we could purchase in the city. You too friend, may you have a safe and blissful trip. Take care. :D

they speak english there so there will be no problem with the communication. although you can't expect to really have an in-depth conversation with them also because you are still a stranger too them. casual conversation will do. i advise you not to be nervous with the trip because the more you think about it, the more it will affect your body without noticing it. you might get sick just thinking about the trip or can even have diarrhea due to too much excitement or worryingg.so realxa and enjoy.

Our travel agent have also told us that some of the people there speak english. We may really have a lot of conversation with them during our souvenir shopping time there, especially when we ask for discounts.:) Do you have places to recommend where we could find cheap souvenir items? Or places where beautiful and majestic scenery could be scene?

I visited Hong Kong when I was 28 years old and had a fantastic time. I stayed at the youth hospital on top of Mount Davis and it had amazing views especially at night. They speak English there so I had no problems communicating. I found a very friendly place. I went there in late July so the weather was hot and humid. I was there as a stopover on my way down to Western Australia. I hope that you will have an excellent time. I have just come back from my visit to Argentina, Chile and Brazil. I was running out of time so I only managed a day trip to Uruguay. I think you would enjoy a tram ride, a ferry trip and a visit to one of the outer laying islands.

It's nice to hear from someone who have already traveled a lot like you. We're going to hongkong in the first week of may and our travel agent have told us that the weather in hongkong during that time would be warm and humid. Although, the good news is, we reside in a tropical country, the Philippines, and that type of climate is not strange to us. I am more excited now that you told me that people in that place are very friendly. We will also have a side trip to Macau, have you also been there? What scenery and heritage would we expect in that place? :D Anyways, thanks for your response..

a pleasant day to you jafn814, first of all, i want to say goodluck on your first and upcoming trip. with regard to that, it is indeed exciting to go to Hongkong. as a first timer, perhaps, try to do some research on how to say the basic language they always use like good morning and hello, hence in this way, you can do greet them with a cheerful smile. aside from that, you can also do a little research about their basic culture, how to deal with Hongkong Nationals, so as in this way, you can show them that you give and show respect to their culture. and please do remember that, showing a respect to another culture is a sign that you properly observed what they exercise. thus in that way, it will be easy to gain their respect as well. have a nice and lovely trip.

Hi! jafn, nice to hear that you are going to Hongkong. How long would you be staying there? We were there last November 2010 and the weather at that time was very cold. Maybe you can check from the net Hongkong's weather during this time of year so you can prepare for the right attire to bring. It is good also to book or place reservations in a hotel while you are still here in the Philippines. Be sure to go to Disneyland and spend the whole day there. Don't fail to watch the shows, it is free once you paid the entrance fee. You can see lots of Filipino artist there. Be sure to carry bottles of water in your bag. Its expensive in Hongkong. Bring lots of food too in your baggage. When we went there we brought foods we can eat for breakfast and dinner. Be sure to carry a map of places to visit in Hongkong. You can get it at the airport upon arrival. Be sure to have your money changed to HK dollars before going around. Take the buses and the train, its more convenient but be sure to move fast. They don't wait for passengers to sit before moving. They are left-sided people, steering wheels of cars, crossing streets, etc. If you have time, proceed to Macau, the place is very nice. I still plan to go back to those places. Enjoy your trip and take photos.

Don't worry about the language barrier, I have been in many countries that don't speak English but always managed to make a plan and communicate with the locals. Everyone loves tourists as they bring in extra income to the towns. Make sure to take lots of pictures and have no expectations, that way this will be the most amazing trip you ever had no matter what.
