I've never had a smoothie before so am wondering if they're good for you or fattening? Are they expensive?

It really depends. Every place you buy from will put in different ingredients. A good way to guarantee the smoothie is cheap, healthy and delicious is to make it yourself--you just need a blender. Toss in some of your favorite fruits: bananas always work well, and I like to put in some kind of berry, or mandarin oranges, or sliced peaches. A little apple juice will add flavor too. Then you need some kind of thickener. A non-fat sorbet in your favorite flavor works great, or yogurt or--if you feel adventurous--coconut milk. If you use one of the last two, you might want to throw in some small ice cubes too, for the slushie texture. Blend thoroughly, and enjoy!

Yummy! That sounds great. I'll definitely attempt making one of these in the near future. Actually, I think I'll copy the little recipe you have above and try that. Thanx :)

If you make your own at home by putting frozen fruit and fruit juice in a blender, it is very healthy. However the kind that you buy other places may not be good for you.

Like everything else in this world, it can be expensive or inexpensive...depends where you go to get one. Can be fattening or not....depends what you put in it. I make my own at home most of the time. That way, I can monitor what goes in it. I usually have a supply of frozen fruits in the freezer all the time - fresh frozen and store bought. For example, rather than throw away the bananas when they get old, I peel them then put them in a ziploc bag and throw them in the freezer - great for use for baking banana bread or making smoothies. So, in a blender, I will throw whatever frozen fruits I have, add some yogurt, apple and/or orange juice for liquid (or fat free or 2% milk or, gasp, ice cream), some crushed ice, then blend away! DELICIOUS! Of course, it is only as thick or thin as the amount of liquid that you put in it. Enjoy!

It depends, if you make it yourself you know what is going in it compared to if you buy it. I usually make some for breakfast, and think they are reasonable healthy. I usually add milk, frozen or fresh fruit, ypgurt, and honey sometimes.
