Here's the story http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-17894176 So the question is, is this just the beginning? Or is it another case of going for the only pirate that the politicians know the name of? Afterall, there are hundreds of torrent sites. They can't possibly block them all. The wider question of intellectual property rights is another matter that has already been discussed on mylot many times before. Here, I'm just interested to know your views on the practical ways and means of censoring the Internet. Is it even possible? And what happens to the perfectly legal torrents that are served via these sites? Do we have to lose legal material just so you can't see a few illegal items? To me, it's like saying - Don't show ANY pictures of humans in case they are pornographic. Can you imagine all your holiday snaps being banned? There has to be a better way! Your views please.

I'm getting tired of goverments around the world censoring the internet. I don't think it is possible to stop all torrent sites or sites that infringe copyright. I think there is more to it, then them just wanting to do this to prevent copyright infringement. They want to infringe on our rights. What happended to freedom of speech, expression? I also agree, there is a disdain against torrents, cause so many people think they are used to distribute copyright material. While torrents can be used for that, they can also be used for legal purposes, such as distributing large files like linux distros in torrents, which are legal.

That is exactly my point! I'm a linux user and these torrents are essential for me. There are tons of legal material in torrents that are being selectively ignored.

Exactly. You wouldn't believe how much opposition there is to torrents. So many people think they are used just to distribute illegal material. They can be used for legal things too. I'm not much of a Linux user, but I get your point entirley.

Most of those who are against torrents have never used them! You can bet that the politicians and judges had to be told what they were!

i can not understand why UK do that, for the Olympic? In china, all things seems to censor, live here is uncomfortable. If we want to buy a knife for family use, there is a censorship? And we can not use Twitter and Facebook to communicate with people in other part of the world.

China is the one place that western governments claim is undemocratic. They often give the severe censorship as an example. Now they are doing much the same thing! Double standards are everywhere in politics!

Hi, Petersum, I don't have much time tu use torrent sites but my daughter does this. I don't think that UK government or any other government in the world would be able to block torrents. As they try to overpower Pirate bay, the Pirate Party in Germany is gaining power. And we saw huge anti ACTA protests, they made a difference. Even in my country where the government almost secretly had signed something about ATCA, they said that they withdraw themselves from this. I'm more optimistic that you on this issue. But let's see. Good luck!

Oh I don't think they can DO anything! It's just rather frightening to have rulers who THINK they can do such things!
